We have an exciting opportunity for an enthusiastic, self-motivated, and experienced Sonographer to support sonography training at Mile End Hospital in this newly created post. The successful candidate will work closely with the Ultrasound Lead Sonographer and Modality Lead Sonographers, to ensure the ultrasound service runs smoothly with staff working at the top of their licence.

The successful candidate must demonstrate excellent communication and interpersonal skills and be committed to providing and developing a high-quality ultrasound training programme at the Mile End Community Diagnostic Service.

The successful candidate will work closely with the other lead Sonographers across the trust and should be able to offer a flexible approach to work. They should have a desire to teach others, have good organisational skills and demonstrate the ability to prioritise their workload and liaise with other departments. Statutory registration with a regulatory body and DMU or Post Graduate Cert / Diploma in Medical Ultrasound is essential.

This post will be based at the Mile End site where the post holder will co-ordinate and deliver training of student sonographers and upskilling of sonographers, radiologists, or other professionals across Mile End, Royal London, and St Barts sites. Developing advanced clinical pathways and improving skill mix with be a core element of this post.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will be an autonomous practitioner with advanced ultrasound experience who can provide clinical and academic leadership in ultrasound education within the Mile End Hospital (MEH) Community Diagnostic Centre (CDC). The role will primarily entail working alongside the site lead sonographer and education lead sonographer to oversee and deliver training and education to any student’s, radiologists, or sonographers requiring upskilling. The post holder will be responsible for providing clinical support and undertaking the local inductions, and 1:1 meeting of all the trainees undertaking courses in ultrasound at CASE accredited institutions. This will involve constant monitoring of student academic and clinical progress in line with the duration of the academic programmes being undertaken and will be responsible for supporting nominated trainee supervisors to create formative action plans to address practice issues whilst also assisting with student summative assessments.

The role requires the successful candidate to actively develop an innovative, appropriately educated and experienced ultrasound team to ensure delivery of a safe, effective, high quality and evidence-based ultrasound service for the patients across.

The post holder will undertake both clinical (70%) and administrative (30%) duties and will assist in the co-ordination, management and allocation of staff in training within the CDC, RLH, SBH as appropriate. They will be the first line coordinators and lines of communication with universities and other course providers. They will work closely and liaise frequently with the NMAHP Education Leads, Director of AHP’s and Ultrasound Clinical Leads to deliver staff training and identify new training opportunities. The post holder will work as a senior practitioner in the delivery of all Ultrasound imaging and will be capable of independently reporting each examination. They will operate effectively within the team of reporting and Imaging sonographers.

The post holder will assist in maintaining teaching and education standards integrating the Ultrasound services across the CDC, RLH, SBH sites and will support the Lead Sonographers at each hospital site to standardise training programmes, clinical protocols and quality assurance processes.

The post-holder will work as a part of a multi-disciplinary team in Imaging, liaising with those involved to ensure the appropriate ultrasound imaging, reporting and management of the patient is provided within local and national waiting time directives. They will maintain a high professional and technical standard ensuring that all staff working in their area are taught to maintain similar standards.
