Join us at a pivotal time for Antenatal Services – where your skills, experience and ideas will help shape a service that is evolving, improving, and making a real difference to women and families every day.

This is an exciting opportunity to join our Antenatal Services at Northampton General Hospital at a time of real transformation and growth. We are investing in and improving the care we provide to women and families, and you will be part of a service that is actively evolving to enhance quality, safety, and experience across the maternity pathway.

We are a supportive and forward-thinking team who are committed to doing things well – and doing them better. You will be joining a service where collaboration is valued, development is encouraged, and your contribution will genuinely make a difference.

In this role, you will work autonomously to perform and report on a wide range of obstetric ultrasound scans, providing clear, compassionate communication to women and supporting informed decision-making throughout their pregnancy journey. You will play a key role not only in delivering high-quality clinical care but also in shaping how the service continues to develop.

Main duties of the job

Alongside your core antenatal work, there is the opportunity to maintain and develop your broader imaging skillset through working within the main Radiography department. This ensures your practice remains varied, current, and professionally rewarding.

As a senior member of the team, you will support and guide colleagues across the multidisciplinary workforce, contributing to training, supervision, and the development of ultrasound practice. You will be encouraged to influence service improvements, contribute to protocol development, and be actively involved in quality, governance, and innovation.

To produce high quality diagnostic ultrasound images.

To carry out procedures/examinations and prepare independent clinical reports for completed ultrasound scans, in line with department protocols.

Triage referrals for ultrasound examinations, ensuring all decisions are appropriate made in accordance with local maternity guidelines, Trust policies, and best practice standards. Where necessary, seek clarification or further information, and provide feedback to referrers to support safe, evidence-based care.

To discuss the findings of the ultrasound examinations with patients where appropriate including fetal death or abnormality.

To be accountable for own professional actions and to act as a role model within the department, setting and maintaining high standards of professionalism and patient care and encouraging the development of a strong and flexible multi-disciplinary team.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

We welcome applications from Midwife Sonographers who bring a unique combination of advanced ultrasound expertise and holistic midwifery care, enabling truly woman-centred practice across the maternity pathway.

You can expect to work within a welcoming, experienced team who support each other, with opportunities to develop across both antenatal and wider imaging services. There is a strong focus on education, professional growth, and collaborative working across University Hospitals of Northamptonshire (NGH and KGH), giving you the chance to broaden your experience and be part of something bigger.

This is more than a clinical role – it is an opportunity to be part of a service that is moving forward, investing in its people, and committed to delivering safe, high-quality, and compassionate care while continuing to grow and innovate.
