Job overview

This is an exciting opportunity to join the prestigious full-time two-year Training course at UCLH in partnership with University College London (UCL) to develop academic and professional skills in Obstetric Ultrasound and Fetal Medicine. The post holder will work as a supervised trainee subject to competency training for ultrasound scanning for pregnant women at 11-14 weeks gestation, anomaly scans and fetal well-being assessments in the Ultrasound Screening Unit (USU) at UCLH. The job is split between two years; the first year will be spent as a ‘junior’ trainee and following successful completion of the training competencies, will progress to a ‘senior’ position in the second year. ‘Senior’ trainees will be required to perform obstetric ultrasound and contribute to training the ‘juniors’. Clinical competencies are reviewed throughout the course. There will also be opportunities for training and development in our Maternal Fetal Assessment Unit, Antenatal Clinic and Labour Ward.

Candidates will be expected to apply to the associated Master (MSc) programme in Obstetric Ultrasound and Fetal Medicine, thus employment at UCLH and enrolment on the MSc are corequisites. Employment at UCLH is based on compliance with continuing and completing the UCL programme subsequently there will be sharing of data between UCL and UCLH. Individuals are responsible for paying their tuition fees for the duration of the course.

Main duties of the job

The applicant will work at UCLH and will be based in the Elizabeth Garrett Anderson Wing. During the first year the applicant will work at the Ultrasound Screening Unit (USU) of the Integrated Antenatal Service, providing the scanning service for routine ultrasound antenatal assessment in the three trimesters. During the second year the candidate will continue to scan in the USU but will be involved in training and care in fetal medicine and other specialist clinics. Time dedicated for education, training and research will be included in the daytime working pattern of 37.5 hours per week.  There is educational time allocated within employment hours (37.5). Study time in addition to this will be required and is in an individual’s own time.

This training programme includes daily teaching sessions in the form of ultrasound and fetal medicine case discussions and an opportunity to further enhance your skills in Teaching and Research.  A certificate of training will be provided to all successful trainees at the end of the Fellowship in association with the achievement of the higher MSc degree.

The post holder will be entitled to apply for a free ISUOG (International Society of ultrasound in Obstetrics and Gynaecology) trainee membership for two years.
