Job overview

A new, exciting opportunity is being offered for enthusiastic and motivated senior trainees (ST4 or above) with an interest in simulation education to join Gloucestershire Hospitals NHS FT. We are looking to expand our simulation service in the emergency department, and we are looking to appoint a simulation fellow in Emergency Medicine for 2025/6.The post will consist of 40% full time equivalent protected time for simulation education work – including the planning and delivery of simulation-based education. The remaining time will be allocated to clinical Emergency Medicine work within the two Emergency Departments.

The Simulation Fellow will be mentored by a senior educator within the department and will be supported by the department lead for simulation as well as the nursing education and development team.

Evidence of prior involvement in delivering simulation education is desirable, however, we are keen to provide formal educational opportunities such as funded attendance at relevant courses or conferences such as:

  • Train the trainers simulation faculty course
  • Simulation debriefing course
  • Attendance at Simulation conference such as ASPiH
  • Generic Instructors Course (GIC) . The role can be undertaken in programme or out of programme (training, experience or pause).In the first instance, applications must be discussed with your educational supervisor and training programme director (TPD), and permission to apply must be granted by the TPD

Main duties of the job

Clinically, as an ED senior doctor (ST4+ equivalent), your role will be in the assessment and treatment of the ill and injured patient as well as providing clinical advice to more junior ED clinicians, where appropriate. You will have the opportunity to be lead or part of the Trauma Team within the ED and to be the nominated Resus or Paediatric doctor of the day. You will be expected to lead your colleagues in these areas as well as being an active team member. The clinical experience you gain will be diverse and interesting.

As an employee of the Trust the post-holder will work in close co-operation with and support other clinical, medical, professional, and managerial colleagues in providing high quality healthcare to the Trust’s patients.

The Simulation Fellow role will suit trainees who are interested in:

  • Contributing to a successful weekly in-situ simulation programme
  • Building relationships with other departments and organising multi-specialty simulation in the emergency department - especially for complex/HALO scenarios
  • Developing skills in simulation education and debriefing.
  • Working collaboratively to drive the trust’s simulation strategy
  • Creating a new and bespoke simulation training day/course for colleagues
  • Reinforcing learning from simulation by developing methods for sharing amongst the whole team
  • Using simulation to test pathways and systems - contributing to safety and risk management in ED.
