Job overview

The Server Engineer (SE) role is a technical position and requires knowledge and experience of the following:   • Virtualisation (Microsoft Hyper-V, Failover Cluster Manager, VMWare etc) •  Active Directory, DNS, DHCP, WSUS, Group Policy etc •  Microsoft 365 (Azure Active Directory, SharePoint, Teams, Exchange Online etc) •  Microsoft Operating Systems (Windows Server, Windows 10 & 11 etc) •  Microsoft SCCM •  Remote Desktop Services or VDI •  Backup and Recovery Tools (Microsoft DPM, Backup Exec etc) •  Server Hardware Installation & Maintenance (Compute, Storage etc) •  Antivirus (Sophos, Windows Defender etc.)   Experience of the following would also be beneficial:

  • 999 or patient care systems within the NHS
  • Microsoft Intune
  • VPN Applications (Microsoft Direct Access, Always on VPN etc)
  • Mail & Web Filtering (Clearswift, Proxies etc)
  • Microsoft Azure (IaaS, PaaS
  • Microsoft SQL Server

The post holder, alongside the other SEs, will be responsible for the installation and maintenance of the Trust’s server and wider digital infrastructure estate, including coordinating any installs, moves, changes, break/fix and decommissioning of assets and services.

They will also be responsible to the Server Manager, for the efficient and effective support of Information Technology and Digital systems and services throughout the Trust, to support first class patient care.

Main duties of the job

  • Assist the Senior Server Engineers, ensuring timely high-quality delivery of IT systems, and efficient resolution of faults.
  • Perform physical maintenance of on-site server hardware e.g., Drive swaps, memory upgrades etc.
  • Ensuring that a comprehensive virus protection and security patching scheme is enforced and maintained across the Trust as part of a security patching rota.
  • Provide out-of-hours cover for the Trust’s business critical systems as part of an on-call rota.
  • Maintain effective systems of data integrity and security and ensure that comprehensive backup and disaster recovery procedures exist and are operated.
  • Creation and completion of Preventative Maintenance Routines to support Service Catalogue items ensuring availability.
  • Implement enhancements and upgrades to existing applications as and when required through change control.
  • Ensure that comprehensive technical and system documentation is established, updated, and maintained.
  • Provide user training and documentation on all systems and applications used within the server environment.
  • Act as a second line engineer, responding to service requests and incidents escalated to the Server Team, meeting the appropriate SLAs.
