Senior Training Fellow in Cardiothoracic Surgery

The training we offer is designed to help doctors who intend to pursue training in a variety of specialities such as GP, medical, surgical, EM and anaesthetics. Training will take place on the ward, ITU, outpatients and in the operating theatre. We are looking for a highly motivated and enthusiastic individual who will make use of the training opportunities which will significantly develop your career portfolio.

Teaching and Training are an important component of this job. You will have a named Clinical Supervisor and must take part in regular appraisals. There will be regular local teaching and weekly Grand rounds that you will be expected to attend. You will be exposed to patients in Critical Care and will accompany rounds with Consultant Cardiac Anaesthetists; you will get an opportunity to develop better understanding of pathophysiology and monitoring of critically sick patients. In the operating room you will have chances to perform supervised procedure eg saphenous vein harvesting; closure of wounds; sternotomy etc. We encourage Fellows to participate in audits ; presentations and publications. You will be encouraged to regularly participate in MDTs and Clinical Governance Meetings.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will be working with a team of Consultants, Specialty Doctors, Trust Doctors, Specialty Trainees, Core Trainees and Foundation Trainees. Each post has a generic clinical component in the relevant area. In addition the post holder will have an agreed experience in the specialty of their choice including outpatient clinics, ward cover, specialist in-patient reviews and procedures, audit and research. It is prudent to be a team player with excellent inter-personal skills.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

The precise role within each team and the proportion of clinical time spent between the two components would depend on previous clinical experience and qualifications of the candidate and the specialty chosen. For candidates with more than 3 years of post-qualification experience, MRCP or equivalent qualifications, Senior Fellowship position can be offered depending on assessment at interview as well as knowledge, skills and aptitude as well as previous competencies achieved in the specialty.
