An exciting opportunity has arisen for two highly motivated and experienced Band 7 Senior Sisters / Charge Nurses to join the Emergency Department at the Royal Victoria Infirmary (RVI), Newcastle upon Tyne Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.

The post holder will provide strong clinical and professional leadership within a busy Emergency Department and Major Trauma Centre, ensuring the delivery of safe, effective, and patient‑centred care. This role requires a visible leader who can manage a complex clinical environment, support staff development, and contribute to service improvement and operational delivery.

The Emergency Department at the RVI is one of the busiest in the region, providing specialist emergency and trauma care to a diverse population across the North East and Cumbria. As a tertiary referral centre and Major Trauma Centre, we pride ourselves on excellence, innovation, and teamwork.

Applicants should be:

  • A Registered Nurse (Adult) with current NMC registration
  • An experienced Emergency Department nurse with strong clinical credibility
  • A confident, compassionate, and resilient leader with excellent communication skills
  • Able to manage complex situations, prioritise under pressure, and inspire others
  • Able to demonstrate substantial post-registration experience within the Emergency or Acute Medicine clinical setting
  • Experienced in managing teams, clinical risk, and operational pressures
  • Committed to ongoing professional and leadership development.

The post holder will:

  • Provide clinical, professional, and managerial leadership within the Emergency Department
  • Act as a visible senior nurse, promoting high standards of care, patient safety, and experience
  • Lead and coordinate teams to ensure effective patient flow, escalation, and operational delivery
  • Take responsibility for shift coordination, staffing, risk management, and incident response
  • Support and develop nursing staff through appraisal, supervision, and education
  • Work collaboratively with matrons, consultants, and senior leaders across the Trust
  • Contribute to quality improvement, audit, governance, and service transformation initiatives
  • Act as a role model for Trust values, professional behaviour, and inclusive leadership

The post holder will be required to work flexibly across a 24/7 rota, including nights, weekends and Bank Holidays.
