Job overview

The Senior Dietitian is expected to work autonomously and as a member of the multidisciplinary teams to provide an effective, highly specialised dietetic service to the Renal Unit and Specialist Tier 4 Bariatric Service at King’s College Hospital.   The role is based at the main hospital site in Denmark Hill and also involves working at satellite dialysis sites across South East London and Kent. The renal dietetics service delivers renal nutrition therapy, including dietary education and behaviour change management in such areas as electrolyte disturbances, nutrition support and weight management. The bariatric dietetics service provides pre and post op surgical advice and specialist obesity and weight management advice to patients undergoing bariatric surgery. There may be opportunity to gain experience in obesity management medications. The role is approximately 0.5 WTE Renal and 0.5 WTE Bariatrics however this is subject to change depending on the requirements of the service.

The post holder will also help educate newly qualified dietitians, student dietitians, medics, nursing staff, dietetic assistants and other staff when appropriate and when required. The role will also involve contribution to team projects and audit.

Main duties of the job

Bariatric Role:

The post holder will work with a team of two band 7 Bariatric Dietitians providing a highly specialised dietetic service to patients referred to the bariatric surgery pathway at Denmark Hill. The post holder will be responsible for a clinical workload consisting of primarily outpatient clinics including group facilitation and inpatient cover when required. The post holder will be expected to actively contribute within the multidisciplinary team and provide highly complex dietetic counselling to patients pre and post bariatric surgery.

Renal Role:

The post holder will also work closely within a highly specialist team of 6 renal dietitians based at Denmark Hill. It involves a mixture of both inpatient ward cover and outpatient clinics. The role may also require cover at satellite haemodialysis units across SE London and Kent including twilight (evening) patients.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

  • ·    To work closely within the Renal team, wards, units and clinics in line with departmental guidelines. Attending all relevant ward rounds, case conferences and audit meetings. ·      Contributes to both internal and interdisciplinary working parties. ·      To work closely within the Bariatric team, including surgeons, nurses, physicians, psychologists and bariatric physicians. ·       To liaise with and advise on dietetic issues directly contributing to the care of patients to medical and nursing staff, both internally and externally with GP’s, district nurses and community teams. ·       To liaise with catering and diet bay staff to ensure appropriate therapeutic meal provision for patients. ·       To take an active part in the training, supervision and assessment of student Dietitians including planning and delivery of seminars/tutorials/programmes. ·       To play an active role in training healthcare professional e.g. medical, nursing and AHP
