  • To assist and support the provision of dental treatment and dental health promotion for all groups of patients cared for by the Community Dental Service. Patients will have a variety of special needs including learning disabilities and behavioural problems, physical disability, mental health conditions and complex medical conditions.
  • To assist the Dental Service Management Team in ensuring that dental facilities operate effectively and safely.
  • To support the organisation, monitoring and evaluation of dental care and provide information for the development of services and training of staff.
  • To line manage the dental nurse staff, including carrying out appraisal, clinical supervision, managing sickness and leave.

Main duties of the job

  • Undertake the normal duties expected of all dental nurses.
  • Work with the policies and procedures of the Trust and Coventry & Warwickshire Community Dental Service.
  • To support specialised treatment services for adults and children with special needs within the clinic, theatres and domiciliary settings.
  • To support the provision of treatment under general anaesthesia for special needs patients, and paediatric dental extractions.
  • To support the provision of treatment under sedation where appropriate.
  • Liaise with all branches of the profession, other health professionals, education and social services and voluntary agencies over the dental needs and service provision for people with special needs.
  • Support the Senior Management Team with the monitoring and evaluation of all service elements and any subsequent programmes of development.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

  • Ensure that direct reports address capability and disciplinary issues as needed and appropriate support is provided to staff.
  • Promote a culture where staff feel empowered and accountable for service improvement at a local level.
  • Ensure that all staff in responsibility receive appropriate training and on-going development to enable them to competently and safely fulfil their roles.
  • Promote learning opportunities in a wide range of formats to improve multidisciplinary and flexible working.
  • Ensure effective supervision and management of all team members, including any work you delegate to them, ensuring the quality, safety and effectiveness of this work at all times
  • Ensure all reports receive effective development reviews and supervision in line with the service and Trust policies and that training needs are identified.
  • Establish and maintain clear expectations of professional behaviour and conduct with the teams and where appropriate, work alongside the Management Team to undertake action in accordance with the relevant Trust Policies.
  • Participate in the staff appraisal process and undertake the appraisal of line reports.
  • Participate in the recruitment and selection of staff as appropriate.
  • Participate in the initial investigation and resolution of grievances from relevant staff.
  • Be responsible for maintaining and developing own competency to practice through CPD activities and to maintain a portfolio which reflects personal development in line with the requirements of the GDC.
