Job overview

The Cytogenetics and Molecular Haematology Department is part of the Specialist Integrated Haematological Malignancy Diagnostic service (SIHMDS) and staff work closely with other scientists in Pathology particularly Immunophenotyping and Cellular Pathology as well as research staff at Queen Mary, University of London and clinical colleagues across the region. The department provides a comprehensive cancer genomics service to East London and Essex and works in partnership with the North Thames Genomic Laboratory Hub. Services offered include Next-generation sequencing, mutation analysis via PCR, post-transplant monitoring and minimal residual disease monitoring.

The East & South East London NHS Pathology Partnership (Pathology Partnership) is being created to form a network across three NHS Trusts: Barts Health (the host), Homerton University Hospital NHS Foundation Trust and Lewisham and Greenwich NHS Trust. The Pathology Partnership will be based on well-established models for pathology networks, with the Royal London Hospital becoming the main hub laboratory for the network and Essential Service Laboratories (ESL) as a minimum at all other Hospital sites.

Main duties of the job

Applications are invited from exceptional, self-motivated HCPC-registered Clinical Scientists (cancer genomics, molecular) to join the Cytogenetics and Molecular Haematology Department.

The post holder will have operational management of a designated area of the service. The post holder will be involved in the analysis and reporting of complex genomic results including molecular tests, cytogenetics and whole genome sequencing (WGS). The post holder will be involved in the research and development of genomic testing for cancer patients.  The post holder will contribute to training and mentoring of the scientific workforce both within the organisation and across the North Thames Genomic Laboratory Hub (GLH).
