Job overview

The respiratory physiology service has an opportunity to appoint a motivated, enthusiastic individual to the role of Senior Clinical Physiologist.  The service provides a comprehensive range of diagnostic testing on a wide variety of patients with both respiratory and non-respiratory conditions.  You will join a busy, friendly, multidisciplinary team including physiologists, clinical scientists, administrators and consultants.

The post is primarily based at the Sleep Centre in Charing Cross Hospital, where they will be involved in a wide range of diagnostic tests and treatments including CPAP provision and support, Respiratory polygraphy, PSG/MSLT and NIV. As part of the cross-site rota, there will also be the opportunity to work in lung function departments within the Trust.

We host students from the PTP and STP courses so there will be an opportunity to be involved in teaching, training and supervision of junior staff.  The postholder will be required to deputise for the Chief Clinical Physiologist in their absence and to proactively contribute to the wider development of the service.  It is essential for the successful applicant to have had previous experience in either sleep physiology or lung function testing, with a good science background with a BSc in Healthcare Science (respiratory major) or equivalent. It would be preferable if you have obtained the ARTP practitioners examination and are working towards RCCP registration or AHCS equivalence.

Main duties of the job

  • Perform standard lung function testing, unsupervised, gaining accurate and clinical valuable measurements.
  • Standard lung function testing including dynamic lung volumes by spirometry; static lung volumes by whole body plethysmography and nitrogen washout; transfer factor for carbon monoxide by single breath method; assessment of bronchodilator response; field exercise testing.
  • Assist in the efficient performance and administration of the Lung Function service and efforts to improve these.
  • Maintain and repair departmental equipment in conjunction with senior staff and clinical engineering.
  • Support the development, implementation and testing of new diagnostic procedures within the department.
  • Assume full responsibility for running the laboratory in the absence of the Principal Clinical Physiologist.
  • Work towards state registration as a Clinical Physiologist through voluntary registration and prescribed professional exams.
