This is to inform that there is an excellent opportunity to join as Senior Clinical Fellow in Nephrology and General Internal Medicine based at Northampton General Hospital. The post has arisen due to the current post holder of national training number in Nephrology and General internal Medicine in UK taking a out of programme experience.
The appointee will work across all aspects of Nephrology and will take part in the on-call rota for Renal Medicine in first instance at a registrar level and possibly General Internal Medicine out of hours on calls in future.
This post is suitable for doctors wishing to pursue a career in Nephrology who wish to gain further experience of the speciality before starting Higher Specialist Training.
The post holder will work alongside the team of Consultants, SpRs, junior medical staff and specialist nurses to optimise the running of Finedon Ward. The SpRs will organise their own rota for ward cover considering GIM commitments and leave.
The post-holder will work across all aspects of the service but will mainly be based on Finedon Ward and caring for patients with predominantly renal conditions. There will be close supervision by the consultants. The key aim will be to develop a broad-based knowledge in nephrology as well as practical procedural skills.
The successful candidate will be allocated an educational and clinical supervisor and encouraged to complete training assessments in line with other trainees at the same level. Educational supervision will be provided and opportunities to develop further experience of nephrology will be available in specialist clinics such as PD/HD/Tolvaptan/Advance kidney care/transplant. The training programme is based on the JRCPTB core curriculum for Nephrology but will be specifically tailored for each trainee to complement their specialist training to date and ensure the programme meets the educational needs of the appointee.
We wish to appoint a candidate who has a good background in general medicine and who is interested in developing an interest in all aspects of nephrology. The experience offered should greatly enhance a candidate’s appointment to Higher Specialist Training in Nephrology.
The post will be based at Northampton General Hospital NHS Trust where the successful candidate will join the existing Nephrology SpRs in sharing duties of ward cover, OPD and dialysis unit etc. Training will be given at an appropriate level in all these skills, and you will have senior support at all times. Most of the candidate’s time will be spent in Nephrology. The candidate will be expected to participate in 1 in 6 renal on call out of hours which involves out of hours on call on Monday (1 in 6) till 2100 and weekends of the same week (1 in 6).
The successful candidate will also be expected to take part in the General Internal Medical Take and on call cover. This would not be the expectation when participating in the renal out of hours on call cover. This is a 1 in 10 shift for nights with two SpRs on each night. In addition, there are 1 in 20 shifts for long-days on take Mon-Thurs, Fri – Sun, twilight shifts, and ward cover day shifts Sat-Sun. We have provided a much safer level of overnight cover at middle grade by increasing the number of our SpRs from 11 to 20. All the other General Internal Medical duties are therefore 1 in 20 so our SpRs spend a much greater proportion of their time in their chosen specialty.
