The Trauma and Orthopaedic department consists of in-patient activity on a 29-bedded ward, a high dependency unit with access to ITU beds and extensive day case surgery, both elective and emergency. The department treats in excess of 1800 emergency admissions, 1300 elective inpatients and 1900 day cases per annum. In addition the department sees about 5000 new outpatient referrals per year. The emergency workload supports a busy A&E department (68,000 attendances per year). The general surgical on-call rota is based solely at the Whittington. The Whittington Health operates a trauma team for dealing with emergency patients with serious or multiple injuries. This includes the general surgical, orthopaedic and anaesthetic SpRs, the surgical SHO and FY1 (all resident on call).
