This is an amazing opportunity, which we believe is a ground breaking role.  This locally employed training fellowship is designed to provide a senior trainee with the opportunity to work with an award-winning Parkinson's Multidisciplinary Team. It is hoped that on completion of the post, the trainee will have acquired the skills and confidence to take on a consultant role with a special interest in Parkinson’s at some point in the future.

Working towards a November 2026 start, we welcome applications from trainees who have this career aim in mind.  ST4-ST7 trainees in Neurology, Geriatric Medicine, Rehabilitation Medicine or Palliative Medicine (or CESR equivalent) or non-consultant CCST holders are eligible to apply.  We will also consider rehab med and palliative med applicants.

Please note if you apply for the post as ST6 or above, this post will only be available on a less than full time basis, at 0.87wte.

Main duties of the job

A job plan will be created specifically for you and with you.  The duties will be subject to review from time to time in light of the changing requirements of the service.

We want you to learn and progress and for this post to add real value; numerous training opportunities are available and you will be actively encouraged to access these options.   Based at Royal Derby Hospital the appointee will undertake duties in the neurology-led movement disorder clinic and the DME-led Multidisciplinary Parkinson’s clinic at the Florence Nightingale Community Hospital. There may be opportunities and potentially a requirement to work across other UHDB sites in order to develop the service and should the need arise.   This post will allow the trainee to develop expertise in the assessment and management of people with Parkinson’s.   Weekly MDT meetings provide a fantastic educational opportunity and there is chance for a forward-thinking individual to shape service developments.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

The Derby Parkinson’s service is recognised by the US Parkinson’s Foundation as a Centre of Excellence, one of only two centres in the UK with this accreditation.  Our service includes not just neurologists and geriatricians, but specialists in old age psychiatry and palliative medicine, hospital and community-based Parkinson’s nurse specialists and nationally recognised therapists. Our Trust’s vision is “taking pride in caring” and our staff certainly do this.  We have staff who go beyond the call of duty for our patients – they’re our heroes.    This 12-month fixed term  training fellowship is designed to provide a senior trainee with the skills and confidence to take on a consultant role with a special interest in Parkinson’s. This is the first Parkinson’s clinical training fellowship in the UK open to both neurology and geriatric medicine trainees.  Weekly MDT meetings provide a fantastic educational opportunity and there is chance for a forward-thinking individual to shape service developments.
