Job overview

Senior Fellow to join the Neuroinflammatory Service at GOSH - 6 month Fixed Term Contract (Maternity Cover)

GOSH provides an NHS England Highly Specialised Service (HSS) for children across London and South and West England with acute and relapsing demyelination and as part of this service manages patients with ADEM, MOGAD and relapsing MOGAD, multiple sclerosis and AQP4 + Neuromyelitis Optica Spectrum Disorder. Amongst other neuroinflammatory conditions. As part of this service we have over 100 demyelination patients, with more than 400 hospital visits per year. The service in addition manages a further 50-100 children with auto-immune encephalitis, opsoclonus myoclonus syndrome, antibody mediated movement disorders, auto-immune myasthenia gravis as well as children with complex neurological presentations as a result of systemic inflammation. The post will provide experience in both the acute care and long term follow up, including managing a range of immune modulating treatments.

The service is highly research active with a portfolio of both investigator initiated and industry funded studies and a strong collaboration both nationally and internationally.

Main duties of the job

Throughout the neuroimmunology fellowship, the fellow will be introduced to the following components amongst others:

Clinical Experience: the fellow will have the opportunity to work directly with patients who have neuroimmune conditions. This will include both outpatient and inpatient settings, where they’ll be involved in the diagnosis, management, and treatment of conditions such as multiple sclerosis, autoimmune encephalitis, neuromyelitis Optica, and MOGAD. They will gain hands-on experience in assessing patients, ordering and interpreting diagnostic tests, and developing treatment plans. The fellow will be required to review patients admitted to the day unit for disease modifying therapies and prescribe the medications. Transition clinics: 6 clinics a year jointly with the adult MS service at the National Hospital of neurology and neurosurgery. The fellow will be expected to coordinate the hand over  (both clinical and research) to the adult team and join the first clinic at the NHNN to insure continuity of care
