SENIOR CLINICAL FELLOW IN OPHTHALMOLOGY (GLAUCOMA)
(Nodal Point 5/ ST6-8 Equivalent) -
Fixed term contract – 12 months
EWTD compliant, Full Time, 40 hrs. per week (plus on-call frequency)
Main duties of the job
The glaucoma service is based in the Iris Clinic in the main eye department. The Iris clinic has 9 slit lamp bays, 5 Humphrey field analyzers, a Goldmann perimeter, SD-OCT, Anterion, stereo fundus camera, optical biometer.
The glaucoma service manages a large number of patients with complex glaucoma and receives referrals from the surrounding area as well as tertiary referrals from other eye departments.
Outpatient Lasers
The following lasers are commonly performed in the glaucoma service:
- Selective laser trabeculoplasty
- Laser peripheral iridotomy (+/- argon laser pre-treatment)
- Argon laser peripheral iridoplasty
- Laser suturelysis
- Laser capsulotomy
Glaucoma Surgery
A full range of glaucoma surgery is offered within the glaucoma service, with the following operations regularly performed:
Incisional glaucoma surgery
- Trabeculectomy
- Preserflo MicroShunt
- Glaucoma drainage devices (Baerveldt Glaucoma Implant / Ahmed Glaucoma Valve)
- Non-penetrating glaucoma surgery (viscocanalostomy)
- Revision surgery of trabeculectomies or aqueous drainage devices
Minimally invasive glaucoma surgery
- iStent, Hydrus, OMNI, Kahook Dual Blade Goniotomy, Excimer Laser Trabecuolostomy
- MINIject
- Endoscopic cyclophotocoagulation
Detailed job description and main responsibilities
Job summary
- To gain comprehensive experience in:
- managing complex glaucoma in a tertiary referral service
- performing a full range of laser treatments for glaucoma
- performing glaucoma filtration surgery, minimally invasive glaucoma surgery and complex cataract surgery
- supervision of allied health professionals working within the glaucoma service and junior doctors training within the department of ophthalmology
- To support the provision of the ophthalmology service including glaucoma clinics, laser clinics, surgery, eye emergency clinic and ward referrals.
- To contribute to the development overall of the glaucoma and ophthalmology service.
- To participate in clinical and other service activities with the object of ensuring a high standard of patient care.
- To work with medical, nursing and managerial colleagues to ensure the high performance in outpatients.
