The Microbiology team at Birmingham Women's and Children's Hospital is looking to recruit an enthusiastic & highly motivated experienced Biomedical Scientist who meets the person specification to be responsible for the day-to-day management and supervision of the technical work. The role will also require the individual to take on the responsibility for Education and Training lead for the department. The post holder will be HCPC registered looking to further develop their career as a Senior Biomedical Scientist in Microbiology. We receive more than 190,000 samples a year across bacteriology, virology and serology. Post holder will be expected to work flexibly across these areas. The post holder will be required to participate in working patterns that facilitate the delivery of a 7 days per week service.

This is a joint role where the post holder will be expected to perform the role of a Senior BMS for 4½ days and under the guidance of the Laboratory Manager take responsibility as Education & Training lead for the remaining ½ days based upon a 37½ hour week. However, the time required to undertake the Education & Training lead must be regularly assesses to ensure there is sufficient time allocated and that the time is being utilised appropriately.

Main duties of the job

The post holder must have specialist theoretical, practical and IT knowledge, to maintain essential competences, as part of their continual Professional Development utilising training courses and other means.

Participate in internal and external quality control and correct any non-conformities and plan, manage and devise appropriate actions to alleviate non-compliances.

To work within HSE and departmental Health and Safety regulations and be aware of Hazards, Risk Assessments and COSHH evaluations before starting all procedures.

The post holder will utilise information computer technology (ICT) on a daily basis to accurately input test requests, authorise and issue laboratory reports.

The post holder will be an experienced registered Biomedical Scientist who performs and interprets routine and specialist biomedical investigations autonomously to provide patients results within agreed quality standards of service delivery and turnaround times.

The individual will have excellent hand to eye co-ordination to support their role in microscope analysis and the operation of complex automated and non-automated equipment.

Supervises staff, including work allocation and day to day management e.g. performance appraisals, attendance, conduct and leave coordination. Reports sickness and absence of team members to a senior member of staff in accordance with Trust and departmental policies. To deputise in the absence of the Laboratory Manager.
