The Homerton Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust is appointing a Senior Clinical Fellow in General Surgery with a special interest in Anal Neoplasia. The post holder will be attached to the internationally renowned Homerton Anogenital Neoplasia Service (HANS). This post is not recommended for anyone looking for extensive training in major Colorectal procedures as exposure to non-HANS colorectal surgery is very limited. Instead, the focus will be intensive training in High Resolution Anoscopy (HRA) with expectation that the post holder will run their own clinics after being trained, followed by continued learning and acquisition of advanced techniques in anal neoplasia management and treatment and contribution to research output of the service. There is an opportunity for the post holder to get involved in teaching and training, audit and quality improvement work in addition to research.
The post is offered on a full-time basis and does include a general surgery on call commitment on a 1:12 basis. Suitably qualified candidates may join the Bank staff for shifts in their specialty.
The post-holders will be expected to ensure the appropriate and safe management of HANS patients in theatre and in clinic when trained sufficiently to run solo HRA clinics. To participate in the on-call rota.
A shared office space, including computer and appropriate secretarial support will be provided.
The post holder will participate in the postgraduate and undergraduate teaching and training programme within the hospital. Research activity will be encouraged.
The appointee’s weekly timetable:
Initially the appointee will spend time with all 9 of the HANS service’s trained anoscopy practitioners to learn the skill of HRA (observe 25, carry out at least 50 under direct supervision, with sign off depending on achieving competency) and the associated administrative tasks then when independent will carry out their own HRA procedures with 2 building to 3 clinics per week. They will accompany the HANS team to theatre on Tuesdays all day. SPA time and admin time will be allocated flexibly and HRA procedure clinics will be allocated according to room availability but there will be flexibility. They will be trained in ablative techniques for anal neoplasia treatment and will carry these out independently when competent to do so.
The post will be based in the Department of HANS – Homerton Anogenital Neoplasia Service within the subspecialty of General and Benign Colorectal Surgery and located in the Sexual Health Department with which it is closely aligned. The post involves supporting the supervising consultants in HANS in the full spectrum of anal neoplasia clinical activity including main theatres, day surgery theatres and High Resolution Anoscopy diagnostic and treatment clinics based at Clifden House.
It is envisioned that the successful candidate will play an active role in improving the HANS service for patients alongside consultants, managers, and the wider hospital team. Experience in quality improvement would be desirable, but training can be provided within the Trust.
As an employee of the Trust the post-holder will work in close co-operation with and support other clinical, medical, professional and managerial colleagues in providing high quality, safe health care to patients. Integral to these responsibilities is the following:
