Clinical Practitioner – Managed Service Network (MSN) for Functional Conditions
We are delighted to share this exciting opportunity to support people with functional conditions in Grampian. Thanks to funding from the NHS Grampian Charity, we will be establishing and evaluating a Managed Service Network (MSN) model over the next two years. A significant amount of work has already been undertaken to identify the need for the service and secure funding, and we are now ready to begin developing.
Initial development work undertaken in Grampian can be found here: Functional Disorder — Future Health and Wellbeing.
Functional conditions describe health conditions with persistent physical symptoms and impairments which cannot be wholly explained, at this time, by any known disease or physical cause. There continues to be emerging evidence and research on the aetiology of functional disorders. Functional conditions span across all ages, genders and demographics. Symptoms vary in severity and complexity and can cause debilitating problems, including increased physical disability, reduced ability to work, psychological distress and poor quality of life.

The new role of Clinical Practitioner has become available in NHS Grampian, which will work directly with people with functional conditions to deliver patient-centred, goal directed therapy and support implementation of self-management approaches. These roles will be part of a small team working through a managed service network (MSN) approach. As with all posts funded by NHS Grampian Charity, the successful candidate must be prepared to participate in publicity to discuss the role and the difference made by the Grant.
We have two full-time posts available as a secondment opportunity for 24 months (part-time hours may be considered). If applying for a secondment, please make sure you have agreement from your line manager in advance. Applications are invited from clinical colleagues from all backgrounds.
These roles will work directly with adults experiencing functional conditions, offering clinical assessment, collaborative formulation, practical support and guidance to help people manage symptoms, navigate services and improve day-to-day functioning. Contact with patients may include individual appointments and supported self-management conversations, delivered in line with agreed pathways.
The team will be hosted in Surgery 3 within the Acute Sector and supported by a project structure through NHS Grampian’s Planning, Innovation and Programmes Directorate.
We welcome informal contact from prospective candidates.
Please contact gram.functionalconditions@nhs.scot for an initial conversation with one of our team.
Interviews are expected to be 17/18th June in-person at Ashgrove House.
