Kelso Medical Group Practice - Scottish Borders

Salaried GP (Permanent)

6–8 Sessions per Week - Commencing August 2026

Closing Date: 12th June 2026

Following the Scottish Government’s Core Investment in General Practice (March 2026), Kelso Medical Group is expanding its clinical team and is pleased to invite applications for a new permanent Salaried GP post (6–8 sessions).

This is a substantive, long-term salaried position within a stable and supportive practice.

For those who may wish to progress further in the future, there is also a clearly defined and genuine pathway to GP Partnership, made possible by the Scottish Government’s recent investment in strengthening and sustaining General Practice.

Importantly, while Partnership is available for interested colleagues following a mutually agreed assessment period, there is no expectation or obligation to pursue this route. We welcome applications from GPs seeking either a long-term salaried role or the opportunity to explore Partnership in time.

We encourage applications from both newly qualified and experienced GPs.

The Practice & Partnership

Kelso Medical Group is a cohesive and collaborative team comprising:

  • 9 GP Partners
  • 5 Full-Time Advanced Nurse Practitioners
  • 3 Practice Nurses

We care for approximately 12,000 patients in a semi-rural setting within the Scottish Borders. The practice is financially stable, strategically focused, and committed to delivering sustainable, high-quality primary care.

Our ethos is built on:

  • Collaborative and transparent decision-making
  • Balanced and manageable workloads
  • Clinical autonomy with strong peer support
  • Sustainable working patterns
  • Protecting work–life balance

There is no Out-of-Hours commitment attached to this post.

For newly qualified or early-career GPs, we offer:

  • A supportive and approachable group of partners
  • Informal mentoring and open-door advice
  • Gradual development of clinical confidence
  • Opportunities to develop special interests over time

Clinical Environment

We operate a well-structured blend of pre-booked and same-day appointments, with significant clinical support from our ANPs and experienced nursing team.

We benefit from strong integration with:

  • District Nursing and Health Visiting teams
  • CTAC services
  • Physiotherapy
  • Pharmacy team

We are a teaching practice hosting senior medical students from the University of Edinburgh and actively encourage professional development and educational interests.

Clinical Systems:

  • EMIS PCS (transitioning to Vision in October 2026)
  • Docman
  • GP Order Comms

The Role

  • Permanent salaried post
  • 6–8 sessions per week
  • Sustainable and manageable workload
  • Supportive multidisciplinary environment
  • Potential Golden Hello package

Partnership Opportunity (Optional)

As part of the Scottish Government’s Core Investment in General Practice, we are able to offer a structured mutual assessment pathway toward GP Partnership for those who may wish to explore it.

This allows interested colleagues to:

  • Gain insight into practice leadership and business structure
  • Contribute to service development
  • Progress toward Partnership in a supported and measured way

This pathway is optional and designed to be transparent, supportive, and pressure-free.

Why This Role May Appeal

This position would particularly suit a GP who wishes to:

  • Establish long-term roots within a community
  • Develop confidence within a well-supported team
  • Enjoy professional autonomy without isolation
  • Maintain work–life balance
  • Either remain salaried long-term or consider Partnership at a future stage

Location & Lifestyle

Based in the historic market town of Kelso in the Scottish Borders, we serve the TD5 postcode area and surrounding rural communities.

Kelso offers:

  • Exceptional outdoor pursuits
  • Affordable housing
  • Excellent schooling options
  • Convenient access to Edinburgh and Newcastle

It provides an ideal setting for those seeking a balance between meaningful professional engagement and high quality of life.
