As part of a remodelling process, NHS Western Isles seeks to appoint enthusiastic and innovative individuals as Rural Emergency Practitioners. As the doctor in the emergency department (ED) you will work as part of a team of 6 Specialist and Specialty doctors on a rota of 12 to 12.5 hour day and night shifts. There is one doctor based in ED working alongside experienced Emergency Nurse Practitioners (ENP). You will have responsibility for managing the full spectrum of acute presentations across all age groups. Support is available from resident doctors if the department is very busy on dayshifts. At night you will be the only doctor based in the hospital working with an ENP, a Consultant Anaesthetist, Surgeon, Medical Consultant, Obstetrician and Paediatrician are on call from home and will attend the hospital if needed. You will be expected to deliver safe and timely decision-making, while collaborating with retrieval services and secondary/tertiary centres when advanced care is required. There is a requirement to demonstrate the skills, knowledge and qualities required to work in Emergency Medicine and an ability to collaborate with hospital teams to manage risk. Successful candidates will be supported in their ongoing professional development e.g. through Credential in Remote and Rural Health.

The Western Isles Hospital is a Rural General Hospital serving approximately 26,500 people. It is modern and well equipped with 85 inpatient beds covering General Medicine (including a 4-bedded high dependency unit and a bay for children), General Surgery, Orthopaedics and Trauma, Obstetrics & Gynaecology, Psychiatry and Rehabilitation.
