Applications are invited for the post of Respiratory Consultant at Dorset County Hospital.  This is an exciting time to join the department following expansion in recent years to be lead provider the Dorset Lung Cancer Screening Programme and Dorset Sleep Service.

The department has a lively and friendly team environment to support new ideas, with effective and innovative services for COPD and asthma, lung cancer, ILD, and sleep and is leading the development of new workforce solutions and service delivery models.

A full range of basic and advanced diagnostic tests are available providing a comprehensive pulmonary function laboratory.  Aside from spirometry, flow-volume loops, helium dilution lung volumes and carbon monoxide transfer factors, the department can perform whole body plethysmography, methacholine challenge, cardiopulmonary exercise testing, arterial blood gas analysis, LTOT and ambulatory oxygen assessments, hypoxic challenge tests, shunt tests, FeNO, overnight oximetry and multichannel domiciliary sleep study.

Main duties of the job

Most respiratory inpatients are managed on the 26-bedded Moreton ward.  The post will include 2 weeks on and off the ward per 4-week cycle.

Key activities include the following:

  • Undertake outpatient clinics in Dorchester and community hospitals.
  • Undertake ward rounds on the respiratory inpatients and supervise the resident staff on the wards
  • Perform work in General Internal Medicine on the wards, with weekday evening post take ward rounds and weekend cover approximately 1:9
  • Attend multidisciplinary team meetings in lung cancer, ILD, sleep
  • Perform regular Bronchoscopy,  EBUS lists and pleural procedures
  • Work with DAIRS (Dorset Adult Integrated Respiratory Service)
  • Contribute to education and training of other staff
  • Contribute to the respiratory team and to the Trust in terms of supporting professional activities, in developing the service, supporting clinical governance activities and contributing to activities that progress the strategic aims of the Trust
  • Contribute to the physiology-led Sleep Apnoea service with MDT for cases with additional medical issues and reporting . Medical Sleep clinics are for cases with non standard sleep related breathing disorders.
  • Support the delivery of the Lung Cancer Screening Programme.

An appropriate higher medical qualification - MRCP or overseas equivalent

Full GMC Registration with a license to practice Entry on the GMC Specialist Register via:

  • CCT (proposed CCT date must be within 6 months of interview) •    CESR or •    Evidence of equivalent training and working as a senior decision maker European Community Rights

5 years clinical experience in Respiratory medicine

Experience demonstrating potential ability to cope with the demands of a DGH based Consultant

Evidence of leadership and service development

Ability to develop effective working relationships and team working

Evidence of understanding of clinical governance

Knowledge of and direct involvement in audit.

Knowledge of principles of research and evidence of involvement in research.

Evidence of ability to contribute to the strategic direction of the Trust

Knowledge of organizational aspects of the NHS

Evidence of teaching experience and abilities appropriate to the post

Ability to communicate effectively
