Applications are invited for the position of Trust Doctor in Trauma and Orthopaedics in South Tyneside and Sunderland NHS Foundation Trust. We are seeking two permanent appointments. The successful doctor will work at middle grade level (ST3-8 equivalent) under the supervision of the T&O Consultant Team.

This post is suitable for doctors with previous Trauma and Orthopaedic experience, who are post MRCS and wish to develop their careers within T&O.

We are a busy Trauma Unit with 28 consultants. Care is provided in all subspecialties, other than orthopaedic oncology. The department is based across two sites, Sunderland Royal Hospital and South Tyneside District Hospital, with elective and trauma care on both sites. The successful applicants will provide elective care, in conjunction with a consultant team, in both hospitals. Trauma care will be in a specific hospital. One vacancy is to provide trauma cover in South Tyneside (1 in 5, non-resident on-call), the other post will provide trauma cover in Sunderland (1 in 13, resident).

Main duties of the job

The post holder will work under supervision of the Trauma and Orthopaedic consultant team to provide high quality elective and trauma care. This will be within inpatient areas, the outpatient setting and theatre facilities.

You will support the junior doctors within the department, liaise with other specialties and the wider multidisciplinary team. Good communication skills are essential.

Participate in the on-call rota as described above.

Regular attendance at morning trauma meetings, monthly clinical governance meetings and participation in departmental teaching.

Ensure mandatory training is up to date and adhere to trust values and GMC Good Medical Practice standards.

We have a proven track record of previous doctors successfully entering specialty training, achieving the FRCS examination and being supported towards Article 13/CESR.

The department is active in Trauma and Orthopaedic research; there is an opportunity for all doctors within the department to be involved. Participation in audit, journal clubs and teaching are encouraged.
