Job summary
Applications are invited for the post of OMFS Trust Doctor within Surgical Division at Sunderland for 12 months. The post is centred on Sunderland Royal Hospital. The department overs both elective and 'on call' commitments to hospitals south of the Tyne, including Shotley Bridge, South Tyneside and University Hospital of North Durham.
It may be very occasionally necessary to visit hospitals in the surrounding area for surgical lists and to attend emergencies. This post is first on-call and working at the level of a Dental Core Trainee level 2 or previously know as a Senior House Officer. This post would be suitable for a dentally qualified candidate or a medically qualified candidate with an interest in a career in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery.
The OMFS Department carries out a comprehensive range of oral and maxillofacial surgery, including oral and facial malignancy with microvascular reconstruction and their subsequent rehabilitation, facial deformity, facial hard and soft tissue trauma, salivary gland surgery, surgical dermatology and dento-alveolar surgery.
There is formal induction and training for all new staff covering both OMFS and ENT work prior to commencing the post. This will be compulsory. There is cross cover with ENT for on-call.
Time is available for attendance on courses and for study or to take examinations identified in your PDP.

- Ward work to provide care for pre & post operative patients
- Medical examination of patients
- Attending to emergency patients presenting to A&E in Sunderland
- Dento-alveolar and minor oral surgery
- On call cover including cross cover with ENT during out of hours on a joint rota

The post is centred on Sunderland Royal Hospital. The department overs both elective and 'on call' commitments to hospitals south of the Tyne, including Shotley Bridge, South Tyneside and University Hospital of North Durham.
OMFS SHO jobs are quite unique due to the fact that many SHOs come from medical or dental backgrounds (sometimes both). A large part of the workload can be dentoalveolar (tooth-related) and infection management, especially in district hospitals
There is formal induction and training for all new staff covering both OMFS and ENT work prior to commencing the post. This will be compulsory.
Time is available for attendance on courses and for study or to take examinations identified in your PDP. There are excellent library facilities at the Sunderland Royal Hospital with access to the Medical and Dental Library in Newcastle University.
Attendance of the local F1 / F2 postgraduate teaching programme is encouraged.
You will undertake and present an Audit Project.
In view of the competitive nature of a career in Oral and Maxillofacial surgery training, publications of papers and presentations and national and international meetings is strongly encouraged.
North Durham & South Tyneside host outpatient clinics and minor operating, but the referral of acute trauma is centralised to Sunderland Hospital. The Resident (Trust) Doctor is not normally involved in off-site activity in any of these hospitals, however, may be contacted about these patients.
