Job overview

We are seeking a Research Midwife to join our expanding Research & Innovation team at Lancashire Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. The post holder will play a central role in delivering high‑quality research across maternity and women’s health, supporting studies that improve outcomes for women, babies, and families.

As a key member of our multidisciplinary research service, you will provide specialist research and clinical care to participants enrolled in Trust‑approved studies. You will act as the lead midwife for allocated studies, taking responsibility for the planning, coordination, and delivery of research protocols in accordance with Good Clinical Practice (GCP), Trust policy, and national regulations.

This is an exciting opportunity for a midwife with a passion for evidence‑based practice and innovation to develop expertise in clinical research.

Main duties of the job

Lead maternity and occasional gynaecology studies, coordinating set‑up, feasibility, initiation, and staff training while ensuring compliance with protocols, approvals, GCP, and Trust policies. Identify, screen, recruit, and consent participants, providing safe, evidence‑based care, monitoring, and follow‑ups. Maintain accurate data, complete eCRFs, and report adverse events per regulations. Manage caseloads, organise clinics, investigations, and scans, and liaise with external services. Work with PIs, clinicians, midwives, and research teams, attending MDTs and acting as a key study contact. Support staff, promote research culture, and deliver protocol, consent, safety, and GCP training. Ensure full governance compliance, maintain updated regulatory knowledge, and support audits and monitoring. Safeguard participant well‑being and provide compassionate care. Contribute to LTHTR’s research strategy, new study development, and pathway improvements.
