Dermatology outpatients are seeking a registered nurse looking to specialise and begin a career in caring for individuals with acute and chronic skin conditions. Being a dermatology nurse is incredibly rewarding the skin is not only our largest organ but also our most visible and when skin conditions are present this can be distressing. The dermatology nurse can support, educate and help to manage the patent sometimes to a full resolution and in a chronic condition provide ongoing support and education.

Dermatology are a welcoming friendly team and the successful applicant will receive a dermatology nursing competency pack and support from nurses and doctors with many combined years of dermatology experience.

Full time: 37.5 hours per week

Main duties of the job

Dermatology is a varied speciality with a mixture of surgical, general and nurse led clinical areas. Once competent you would be expected to scrub and assist in surgical procedures ranging from a biopsy, to flaps, grafts and micrographic surgery. You would support doctors and nurse consultants with general and urgent suspected skin cancer clinics, ensuring the patient is supported throughout the consultation and their outcome paperwork reflects the clinicians next steps.

Registered nurses in dermatology following further competencies could work assisting with admission avoidance for acute dermatological conditions, run nurse clinics for post operative care, educational input, severe acne, phototherapy, biological medication, paediatrics, allergy testing and teledermatology, there are many areas within the specialty to learn and develop with guided support and at an agreed pace.

Dermatology runs clinics at NNUH and Cromer Hospital, the post will predominantly be based at NNUH but there may be an exceptional occasion when you may need to work at Cromer dermatology. We have previously held clinics in the community within GP surgeries, this is not currently happening, but this may be required in the future.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

  • Ensure practice is in accordance with the NMC Code of Professional Conduct and work within limits of competence.
  • To have successfully completed the Trust’s preceptorship programme.
  • Maintain a high standard of nursing care applying evidence-based practice.
  • Carry out assessment, planning, delivery and evaluation of nursing care without supervision.
  • Carry out the daily personal care of patients.
  • Maintain accurate records of all care given.
  • Update patient administration systems e.g. PAS to ensure real time data collection and confidentiality.
  • To effectively use information technology for the benefit of patient care in accordance with the Trust’s Cyber Code of Conduct.
  • To maintain confidentiality of information (written, verbal, electronic), whilst being aware of the Freedom for Information Act.
  • To promptly and effectively communicate relevant changes in patient status to the multi-disciplinary team.
