We have a Band 5 vacancy in our QEQM Cardiac Catheter Lab, and we are looking for a very special nurse! You will be keen to learn new skills and have an interest in acute cardiac nursing. In return, we will train you to care for cardiac patients and teach you the skills for our lab procedures. This will include working as a scrub nurse and joining our team that treats patients from across the whole of Kent who are having an acute heart attack!
The role is based at QEQM, but will require dual site working at our lab at William Harvey Hospital in Ashford. Here in Margate, our lab manages a fascinating and really worthwhile caseload. Procedures include the diagnosis of coronary artery disease, implantation of pacemakers and other complex devices, as well as related procedures, such as electrophysiology and cardiac monitor implantation. Our nominal working day is 8-6, but some flexibility is essential to meet the needs of our patients. Any extra time accrued will be noted and appropriately compensated.
Our day to day duties include the admission, post procedure care and discharge of day case cardiac patients. Our small and friendly team rotate between the roles of recovery nurse, lab circulating nurse and lab scrub nurse. A supportive training environment guided by robust competency documentation will be provided. When working in the Cath Lab, X Ray safety measures are in operation. It is necessary to wear protective lead aprons. These weigh approximately 7 KG and may need to be worn for extended periods. Applicants with musculoskeletal problems need to bear this in mind. During the training period across both sites, the nurse will rotate throughout the Labs, gaining the skills of circulating nurse and scrub nurse working alongside the cardiologist. Once fully trained it is mandatory to participate the Trusts flagship 24 hour on call service at WHH for those critical STEMI (Heart Attack) cases. You will then be part of a team that literally saves life on an almost daily basis!
When fully trained there will be approximately 3-4 on call sessions each month. This will provide the opportunity to usefully increase income. Travel costs will of course be remunerated in line with Trust policy. It is not a mandatory requirement to be a car owner, but you would need to understand the commitment and satisfy the interview panel that you could meet the needs of the service.
