Job overview

HMP Woodhill is a category A/B prison comprising of five residential wings (including a stabilisation unit), a segregation unit, clinical assessment unit, the close supervision centre and reception area. Each area has a group of dedicated healthcare staff committed to improving services and delivery of healthcare to prisoners with a range of complex health problems and diverse ethnic backgrounds.

The Addictions Team helps people in HMP Woodhill who want to break a cycle of addiction to substances such as heroin, club drugs, other types of stimulants or long-term alcohol addiction. It represents the bringing together of a variety of services under one roof to provide a better service to service users. We offer a variety of psychosocial and clinical interventions to support clients throughout their journey in custody, starting from their arrival into prison and through to their release.

Main duties of the job

Clinical Responsibilities:

  • To work as a member of the multidisciplinary team, which provides a range of specialist services to substance users, including harm minimisation approaches, motivational interviewing, relapse prevention, care planning, health education and detoxification, mindfulness and groupwork.
  • To make continuous assessments of the psychological, emotional, social, and rehabilitative needs of clients, taking into account the needs of family, local community and sentence plan, with regular evaluation of care plans.
  • To provide case management to a defined caseload of clients, under the supervision of the Team Leader.
  • To use agreed and established outcome monitoring tools and any other relevant quality measures.
  • To manage the transfer of individuals between prisons and into the community.
  • To counsel individuals about their substance use, using motivational interviewing and other evidence-based interventions.
  • To ensure full risk assessment and risk management is delivered effectively.
