Applications are invited for the post of Consultant Radiologist (Clinical AI Lead) to support the strategic development and delivery of artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning, education, training, service evaluation, and research at the National Imaging Academy Wales (NIAW). The role will focus on driving innovation, supporting translational research, and enabling the safe and effective adoption of AI within radiology services across Wales.
This is a one-year fixed-term appointment, with the possibility of extension for a further year.
The Academy offers outstanding facilities, including a 100-seat lecture theatre, three workstation-based teaching suites, simulation facilities, dedicated AI and digital infrastructure, and state-of-the-art audio-visual systems to support high-quality education, research, and collaborative development.
We are seeking a Consultant Radiologist with demonstrable expertise and a strong interest in AI development, machine learning, and digital innovation in radiology. The postholder will contribute to high-quality service evaluations, research programmes, AI education, and training delivered from the Academy site, while complementing and enhancing NIAW led AI initiatives across Welsh hospital sites.
Consultants with experience in AI development and implementation, digital health leadership, research, and postgraduate education are particularly encouraged to apply and join this exciting phase of NIAW’s development.
DUTIES OF THE POST
Alongside the Senior Management team, the Consultant Radiologist (Clinical AI Lead) will be expected to
Provide strategic leadership for AI-related research and service evaluation activity within NIAW and across NHS Wales, supporting the development, evaluation, and translation of AI technologies into clinical radiology practice
Lead and contribute to research programmes involving artificial intelligence, machine learning, and large language models, including clinical validation, real-world evaluation, and impact assessment of AI tools
Foster collaborations with Higher Education Institutions (HEIs), industry partners, and the third sector to support high-quality, ethically approved AI research and innovation
Support the development of grant applications, research funding bids, and business cases related to AI and digital health innovation
Ensure AI research activity aligns with NHS Wales priorities, regulatory requirements, and robust data governance, information security, and ethical standards
Promote dissemination of research outputs through peer-reviewed publications, presentations, and knowledge-sharing activities, supporting a culture of innovation and evidence-based adoption of AI
