POST: Radiographer (Therapeutic) Band 5
LOCATION: BH&SCT based at Belfast City Hospital WH&SCT based at Altnagelvin Hospital
GRADE: Band 5
RESPONSIBLE TO : Management Levels for reporting & accountability will depend on the Hiring Trust and will be clarified with you when you start.
Job Summary / Main Purpose
The principal duty of the postholder will be to carry out radiotherapy planning and treatment as prescribed by a Clinical Oncologist, and other related activities, ensuring each patient receives high quality, patient focused care. This will include assisting in localisation and verification of treatment techniques, giving treatment related information and advice, monitoring patient’s reactions to treatment and assisting with planning and on-treatment review clinics. The postholder will be expected to participate in the departmental job rotation system.
Main Duties / Responsibilities
For each of the following, the postholder will;
Clinical
• Ensure safe and accurate delivery of radiotherapy treatments and maintain accurate treatment records both manual and electronic.
• Assist with localisation and verification of treatment techniques using CT and treatment imaging modalities, ensuring the accurate recording of pre-treatment and / or planning information.
• Undertake manual calculation of treatment monitor units and verification of treatment data including electronic portal images.
• Ensure that patients are cared for and supervised while in the department, to provide clear and accurate treatment information, advice and support, to monitor treatment toxicity and report adverse reactions.
• Provide information and support to patients, carers and other health professions.
• The postholder will have access to senior radiographers for expert clinical advice and support.
Quality and Safety
• Liaise with senior radiographers for clinical issues arising in relation to specific patients.
• Ensure the safe operation of radiotherapy equipment and immediate reporting of faults.
• Immediately report all errors and near misses.
• Ensure corrective and preventive measures are safely implemented.
• Be familiar with, understand and adhere to all Trust policies and procedures, departmental protocols, QA procedures, emergency procedures, local rules and Health & Safety policies. To comply with all relevant legislation pertaining to the use of Ionising Radiations (IRR’s, IR(ME)R).
• Maintain a safe environment for patients, staff and visitors.
Professional
• Develop and maintain evidence based competency skills and knowledge in a broad range of radiotherapy practice.
• Keep up-to-date in all aspects of radiotherapy and associated technological advances and new techniques.
• Take responsibility for own continuous professional development and competence to practice, undertaking appropriate training when required.
• Contribute to relevant research projects and service development initiatives.
• Work effectively as a member of a multi-professional team contributing to service and policy developments and development of new techniques.
Managerial
• Participate in annual appraisal.
• Participate in audit.
• Understand and comply with all aspects of governance relating to radiotherapy.
• Actively participate in the training and supervision of student radiographers.
• Undertake other duties appropriate to grade as required by the Radiotherapy Services Manager.

Used as part of their business within the Health and Social Care Trust, including patient/client, corporate and administrative records whether paper based or electronic and also including e-mails. All such records are public records and are accessible to the general public, with limited exceptions, under the Freedom of Information Act 2000, the Environment Regulations 2004, Data Protection Act 1998 and GDPR (2018). Employees are required to be conversant with the BHSCT and WHSCT policy and procedure on records management and to seek advice if in doubt.
Environmental Cleaning Strategy
The Trusts Environmental Cleaning Strategy recognises the key principle that ‘Cleanliness matters is everyone’s responsibility, not just the cleaners’ Whilst there are staff employed who are responsible for cleaning services, all Trust staff have a responsibility to ensure a clean, comfortable, safe environment for patients, clients, residents, visitors, staff and members of the general public.
Infection Prevention and Control
The Trusts are committed to reducing Healthcare associated infections (HCAIs) and all staff have a part to play in making this happen. Staff must comply with all policies in relation to Infection Prevention and Control and with ongoing reduction strategies. Standard Infection Prevention and Control Precautions must be used at all times to ensure the safety of patients and staff. This includes:-
• Cleaning hands either with soap and water or a hand sanitiser at the appropriate times (WHO ‘5 moments’);
• Using the correct ‘7 step’ hand hygiene technique;
• Being ‘bare below the elbows’ when in a clinical environment;
• Following Trust policies and the Regional Infection Control Manual (found on intranet);
• Wearing the correct Personal Protective Equipment (PPE);
• Ensuring correct handling and disposal of waste (including sharps) and laundry;
• Ensuring all medical devices (equipment) are decontaminated appropriately ie cleaned, disinfected and/or sterilised;
• Ensuring compliance with High Impact Interventions.
