Nottingham University Hospitals (NUH) is nationally recognised as having an established Advanced Clinical Practitioner (ACP) service, with ACPs embedded across 18 specialties. We are now seeking committed, enthusiastic and compassionate individual/s as a qualified ACP to join our Respiratory team to deliver the highest quality care to our patients. Successful applicants will have already completed an MSc in Advanced Clinical Practice or have achieved the Centre for Advancing Practice digital badge.

The respiratory department is led by a group of Respiratory Consultants and delivers secondary and tertiary care. Our team of experienced respiratory ACPs provide cover to the Respiratory Assessment Unit and Respiratory Same Day Emergency Care Unit. The SDEC Unit was set up and is primarily staffed by ACPs providing rapid assessment of patients alongside an experienced nursing team. We also offer an inreach service to ED to provide autonomous early intervention to patients who present at the QMC campus. Our goal is to provide the best possible care in this busy and thriving department. The practitioner can expect to encounter conditions ranging from common acute respiratory presentations such as such as asthma and COPD, respiratory infections, and complications of lung cancer; to more complex conditions.

We currently have a team of 11 qualified and 2 trainee ACPs, with a mix of both Nurses and Physiotherapists and are looking for a motivated individual to join our team. We are an established service at NUH having ACPs in post since 2015 with the team consistently growing since then. We have an agreed set of capabilities in practice governed by the Senior Advanced Practice team and the Lead Respiratory Consultant for Advanced Practice. The successful candidate will need to demonstrate that they have a comparable set of capabilities through a review of a contemporary and detailed portfolio.

The successful candidate will be required to work across both campuses and shift work in line with our current patterns. We provide a 7-day service to our admissions unit, with a 5-day service to the Respiratory SDEC Unit and Emergency Department. Our current shift times are 9am-8pm, including weekends and bank holidays.

Led by Trust & Care Group Lead ACPs, NUH has well-established teams of ACPs in 18 specialties. A robust governance structure & career framework supports individual & team development. The post holder will have Trust-wide responsibility to promote clinical excellence in patient care by providing clinical advice & support to their multi-professional colleagues. The role will include developing audit & research projects & participating in up-dating & implementing departmental policies, protocols/guidelines, in line with national guidance & contemporary evidence. The qualified ACP will undertake the role in accordance with Trust & Departmental guidelines but have freedom to act within broad policies & protocols, in accordance with professional responsibilities & boundaries. The qualified Advanced Clinical Practitioner will build on established specialist knowledge and skills to provide healthcare autonomously to patients in respiratory working alongside the existing team. The post holder will be a 1st level registered nurse or registered allied health professional with an MSc in Advanced Practice and Non-Medical Prescribing qualification. They will have experience in working within the specialty or an equivalent setting. They will have excellent communication skills and be able to liaise with patients and their families in planning their care. They will be expected to provide evidence of their ongoing continuing professional development. Once appointed the candidate will be allocated a Consultant Supervisor who will have job planned time for monthly supervision meetings and will also complete and annual review of clinical practice.

Once embedded within the specialty the successful candidate will have the ability to develop an area of sub specialist interest. The candidate will work alongside a consultant who will provide regular supervision, and we have ACPs working in the following outpatient areas; Pulmonary Embolism, Lung Cancer, Bronchiectasis with plans to assist with sleep and ventilation services and pleural services.
