An exciting opportunity has been generated to assist the associate chief pharmacist in the delivery of the clinical services to Alder Hey.
This is a new role within the trust making the clinical services more robust.
They will be accountable for
- The delivery, management and development of paediatric Pharmacy services within the division of medicine throughout the Trust in accordance with professional standards and Medicines Management Frameworks.
- Providing expert paediatric clinical pharmacy advice, undertaking risk management assessments and ensuring compliance with relevant medicines legislation and CQC standards.
- Leading and developing audit and research within the medicine division with regards pharmacy services
- Leading and managing the medical Pharmacy team
Main duties of the job
- To manage and develop the provision of a safe and effective paediatric pharmacy service to the division of medicine.
- To provide expert advice on paediatric drug therapy to pharmacy, nursing and medical staff across the division of medicine.
- To lead the medical Pharmacy Team, including pharmacists and technicians and ensure the provision of in-house specialist paediatric medicine training for all pharmacists and technicians relative to their needs
- To liaise with senior clinicians across Division of Medicine regarding safe medication practice and risk management
- To contribute to the development and ongoing improvement of the Division’s Electronic Prescribing and Medicines Administration system
- To develop, implement and monitor pharmaceutical standards of care, undertake audit and research within the Division of Medicine pharmacy service
- To deputise for associate Chief Pharmacist – Clinical services when needed
Detailed job description and main responsibilities
- To represent Division of Medicine Pharmacy Services at relevant Trust
- To represent Alder Hey on the Regional Safety Subgroup and Northwest Pharmacy Forums.
- To regularly provide education and training to pharmacy, medical, nursing and other health careprofessionals using a variety of methods g. classroom teaching, small-group tutorials, lectures, one-to-one coaching.
- To provide highly specialist paediatric pharmaceutical information and advice to medical, nursing staff and other staff within the Division of Medcine when there is a lack of evidence and experienced clinicaljudgement needs to be exercised
- To critically review medical literature and use this information to prepare clinical guidelines for use across the Division of Medicine.
- To communicate with the Pharmacy MSOs, wider Pharmacy team, and the Senior Pharmacy Leadership Team; to provide detailed analysis of medication errors, potential risks and solutions and report to the relevant departmental group(s) as
- To provide highly specialized clinical pharmacy advice across the Division of Medicine
- To provide a ‘consultant’ pharmacist role for other pharmacists, medical and nursing staff on drug use in Division of medicine services both within and external to the Trust
- To provide expert paediatric pharmaceutical advice to the Medicines Management and Optimisation Committee
- To contribute to updates of the Trust Medicines Management
- To lead the Pharmacy Service within the Division of Medicine, acting as role model, teacher and trainer.
- To identify, through the business planning cycle, new service developments within the Division of Medicine Pharmacy Service.
- Implement and monitor any such developments, as
- To have good keyboard skills
- To provide and manage a highly specialized paediatric Pharmacy Service to the Division of Medicine in accordance with professional, departmental and Trust policies. This will include:
- taking drug histories on admission for selected patients
- optimising medication to ensure safe and effective use for individual patients
- formulation of individual pharmaceutical care plans
- review and update of care plans depending on response, results of investigations and adverse effects
- therapeutic drug level monitoring for specific drugs
- educating patients and parents about their drug therapy
- participating and providing advice to multi-disciplinary meetings
- developing evidence-based treatment protocols
- facilitating implementation of local and national guidelines
- providing advice on adverse drug reactions, drug administration and formulation
- transferring relevant information to other care providers (e.g. community pharmacists)
- To provide highly specialist paediatric pharmaceutical information and advice to medical, nursing staff and other staff within the Division of medicine when there is a lack of evidence and experienced clinicaljudgement needs to be exercised
- To regularly provide a highly specialized Pharmacy Service to the medical inpatient wards
- To provide a a clinical pharmacy service within the inpatient and outpatient dispensaries when required
- To be a member of the Pharmacy Senior Leadership
- In the absence of the Chief Pharmacist and Associate Chief Pharmacist deputise in their role as required
- To support and assist in the development of the department business plan
- To plan and develop Pharmacy Services throughout the Division and Trust, coordinate clinical pharmacistactivity and audit the clinical service against agreed standards
- Responsible for development and implementation of paediatric clinical pharmacy standards and procedures to ensure safe and effective use of medicines throughout the trust.
- To review and provide information on drug utilization and provide advice on prescribing patterns to the Associate Chief Pharmacist and Division of medicine management team.
- To be an authorized financial signatory for the pharmacy department for up to
£50,000
- Line management responsibility for Division of Medicine Pharmacy staff
- To carry out recruitment interviews for staff within the department including chairing interview panels
- To undertake individual appraisals and personal development planning for advanced and specialist clinical pharmacists
- To liaise with other Clinical Pharmacy Managers, both locally and nationally, to improve the delivery of Pharmacy Services
- To monitor clinical pharmacist activity and co-ordinate peer review and follow
- To develop and provide a comprehensive in-house clinical pharmacy training programme for divisional pharmacists.
- To provide clinical pharmacy training for pharmacy under-graduates, pre- registration pharmacists, post-graduate pharmacists and technicians.
- To act as tutor to pre-registration pharmacists, clinical technicians and pharmacists undertaking postgraduate diplomas in clinical pharmacy.
- To provide expert paediatric drug related education and training to medical, nursing and other health care professionals at undergraduate and post graduate level within or external to the Trust.
- To oversee and provide induction training for Junior Doctors on Medication Safety and PaediatricPrescribing in relation to Pharmacy Services with in the divison
- To accurately input information into the Trust’s EPMA, Pharmacy drug management and Medicines Information systems
- To coordinate and supervise research projects for undergraduate pharmacy students, pre-registration and post-graduate pharmacists within the division of medicine
- To participate in practice research within the division of medicine. This includes identifying areas for research, undertaking own research, acting as a research mentor for students, implementing research findings and promoting publication of audit and research findings locally or nationally
- To participate in continuing professional development as per department policy and national guidelines from the Royal Pharmaceutical Society of Great Britain and General Pharmaceutical Council.
- To undertake specific duties agreed with the Chief Pharmacist and associate chief pharmacist in line with the grade and scope of the post.
Contracted hours per week to be worked flexibly between the core hours of 8:00am and 6;00pm Monday to Friday, or part time as agreed, with commitment to Bank Holiday, late nights, and weekend working (Saturdays and Sundays) as required
Alder Hey currently operates a 7-day service. The pattern of working in all units may be subject to change.
