Job overview

Are you keen to earn while you learn and train as a pharmacy professional? If so, we are looking for enthusiastic, and self-motivated individuals with good interpersonal skills to join our team of Pre-registration Trainee Pharmacy Technicians (PTPTs) for our September 2024 cohort at St George’s University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. Successful completion of the qualification will enable the PTPT to register with the GPhC as a registered Pharmacy Technician.

The Pharmacy Department is highly regarded in the Trust and has 270 staff members. The department is friendly, forward thinking and constantly expanding with opportunities for personal development and post qualification training and development options. Once qualified there are a variety of options for career progression as a Pharmacy Technician within the department.

The postholder will follow a structured training programme at St George’s University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, whilst studying and working towards a General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC) recognised qualification.

Main duties of the job

Practical skills will be obtained through planned rotations throughout the hospital pharmacy department including Inpatient Pharmacy, Outpatient Pharmacy, Satellite Dispensing Units, Wards, Pharmacy Stores and Distribution, Procurement and Clinical Trials and Technical Services.

  • Trainees develop a range of work-based skills during the training programme including:
  • Dispensing and labelling medication
  • Providing counselling to patients on how to use prescribed medication
  • Taking drug histories and carrying out medicine reconciliation
  • Assessing the suitability of patients own medicines for use
  • Making the final check on prescriptions
  • Preparation & maintenance of cleanrooms used to produce injectable medication
  • Dispensing and compounding of injectable medication

The training programme will combine the practical experience gained in the work environment with the underpinning knowledge of a college-based qualification over a two year period. This involves attending college one day a week, completing knowledge-based assignments and producing a portfolio of evidence to demonstrate work- based competencies.
