Job overview

The Portering and Post Room Services Department at Salisbury NHS Foundation Trust is seeking a motivated, enthusiastic, and experienced Team Leader to deliver an outstanding customer experience and ensure the efficient delivery of a high-quality, patient-focused portering service across the Trust.

This is a hands-on leadership role that requires day-to-day management and control of the shift you are working on, ensuring services run smoothly, safely, and in line with Trust expectations. You will be responsible for overseeing staff deployment, managing workloads, responding to operational issues, and maintaining service standards throughout your shift.

The successful applicant will be ambitious, people-focused, and confident in leading others, with proven experience of managing a small team in a fast-paced environment. You will have the presence and communication skills needed to influence the day-to-day running of a busy portering service and to maximise the performance and productivity of your team.

The post holder will support, direct, guide, and train staff within the Portering and Post Room Services Department, while also working operationally alongside the team. Duties include the safe and efficient movement of patients, samples, post, and medical records across the Trust.

This role operates across a 24-hour, 7-day service including early, late, and night shifts on a rolling rota. Certain shift patterns attract enhanced hourly rates, including weekends and bank holidays.

Main duties of the job

If you enjoy working with people, are a natural leader, and are motivated by delivering high-quality services, you should be able to demonstrate the following:

  • Significant experience dealing with the public in a diverse, fast-moving, customer-focused organisation
  • At least one year’s experience managing or supervising a small team
  • Proven ability to lead and control a shift, including allocating duties, monitoring performance, and resolving issues in real time
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to assess, instruct, coach, and train staff
  • Confidence in making decisions and working on your own initiative
  • Strong leadership and organisational skills
  • Good IT skills (e.g. Microsoft Word, Excel)
  • Full UK Driving Licence

You must be able to work a variety of shift patterns over seven days to support a 24-hour service, including early, late, and night duties as part of a five-week rotation.

The Team Leader role also includes administrative responsibilities such as processing timesheets, conducting staff appraisals, maintaining electronic training records, and supporting staff development.
