The role of the phlebotomist is to provide support to the multidisciplinary team on the ward.
The post holder will perform unsupervised high quality phlebotomist duty, within their sphere of competence.
The post holder will collect blood samples for pathology through venepuncture in response to requests by clinicians in accordance with the protocol and procedure specified by the department of pathology.
Main duties of the job
- To obtain blood samples from patients on the ward.
- Checking patient’s details and providing information as required and before taking bloods.
- Involve patients and relatives / carers in the delivery of care.
- Collecting and testing specimens as required and reporting abnormalities.
- Ensure rooms are stocked with relevant items for the ward or phlebotomy trolley.
- Trolleys and work surfaces are cleaned before start and after o the shift.
- Ensure the patients’ names are on Cerner for bloods.
- Ensure a sufficient supply of equipment is available for each ward.
- Ensure all equipment is in good working order.
- Be aware of own competence and knowledge, asking for assistance where required.
