We have an exciting opportunity for a midwife with previous experience in perinatal pelvic health services in the UK to join our team.
About the Role: You will be part of the SEL perinatal pelvic health team (PPHS), working within GSTT and linking with other pelvic health physiotherapists and midwives across various maternity units in SEL. This small but dynamic team received an RCM award in 2023 for outstanding teamwork.
As the pelvic health midwife for GSTT, you will collaborate closely with maternity and physiotherapy departments. You will continue embedding perinatal pelvic health services, which were part of an early implementer pilot for this programme. This role involves prevention, identification and treatment of women with mild to moderate pelvic health dysfunction. You will work with the Clinical lead that provide virtual education classes, outpatient appointments in hospital and the community and reporting key metrics to our local maternity and neonatal system.

Main duties of the job
The pelvic health midwife will provide a high-quality, woman-centered midwifery service in accordance with NMC rules and Trust standards.
Key responsibilities include working with the multidisciplinary team to monitor and improve care quality, leading initiatives such as OASI and pelvic health training, and providing professional leadership. The role involves developing and managing specialist care programs for women with pelvic floor dysfunction, maintaining pelvic health guidelines, and offering evidence-based education to colleagues and students. Effective communication with primary and secondary care, maintaining confidentiality, and participating in quality improvement programs, audits, and research are also essential. Additionally, the midwife will be responsible for establishing antenatal education materials, training staff, and contributing to policy development and service evaluations.
Detailed job description and main responsibilities
1. Communication
- Maintain a high profile in the clinical area and be accessible to all staff.
- Maintain good communication with primary and secondary care in relation to referral pathways and the PPHS.
- Demonstrate effective interpersonal skills when dealing with all levels of staff across the trust and be able to challenge senior staff around pathway performance
- Liaise with the multidisciplinary team including colorectal, obstetrics and physiotherapy when designing pathways for women with a previous OASI and following up women who have sustained an OASI
- Develop communication networks with LMNS and NHS England to ensure that local practice is up to date and innovative practices around Pelvic Health.
- Communicate relevant information to women and their families in a manner that is consistent with and meets their individual needs.
- Maintain confidentiality at all times as required by legislation and trust policy
- Actively try to resolve issues and complaints at local level, or ensure clear and concise advice is given to people on the complaints procedures in place (PALS, names and addresses of the senior team etc.)
- In the event of failing to resolve issues and complaints at a local level, report to the appropriate person
- Facilitate and cascade information to the wider maternity team in relation to PPHS
2. Quality
- Participate in the investigation of clinical incident reports, complaints and concerns relating to and in association with Pelvic health in maternity.
- Ensure staff have the ability to maintain contemporaneous record in line with the Clinical Negligence scheme for Trusts (CNST) and professional standards
- Participate in the development of policies, protocols and clinical guidelines in support of the PPHS.
- Organise, prioritise and adjust own workload in a manner that maintains and promotes quality
- Present audits and service evaluations at Trust Group and LMNS level
- Foster public confidence through the promotion of a professional, positive image, developing and implementing standards for dress and behaviour
- Work within the limits of own and others competence, levels of responsibility and accountability in the team
3. Education and training
- They will be responsible for establishing antenatal education materials and formalising of care pathways required in line National and Regional PPHS recommendations.
- Education of enhanced skills of OASI prevention to midwives, students, obstetricians, multidisciplinary team and the LMNS.
- Work in collaboration with the institutes of higher education to enhance learning experiences of students and qualified staff
- Participate in the development and implementation of education and training programmes within maternity, ensuring equity of provision and consistency
- Provide training and support for new starters and including resources in relation to pelvic health.
4. Management and Leadership
- Provide advice and support as required, and give feedback in a manner likely to maintain and improve performance
- Act as an assessor, coach and mentor to junior staff supporting their development
- Be involved in induction and monitoring of new staff
- Challenge and report complacency, poor care and performance
- Contribute to recruitment and selection of other staff
5. Policy, Audit and Research
- Asist with the auditing of records ensuring standards are high and in line with the NMC and GMC standards and local guidelines
- Audit women sustaining an OASI or any perineal trauma and integrate recommendations into colleagues training to reduce rates and increase learning in practice. Perform a service evaluation of training programmes and cascade to OASI care bundle if appropriate. Extend services to include all perineal trauma and audit services accordingly
- Participate in local and national research initiatives to understand the prevalence of pelvic floor dysfunction and the needs of the local population.
