The Patient flow coordinator works as part of the Emergency Department Team, within both the Emergency Department (ED) and Majors under the supervision of the Senior Nurse for the Emergency Department and performs the functions listed below.
- Coordinate patient access and flow within the key areas of Emergency Department.
- Coordinate patient access and flow within the Emergency department, at all times working with the MDT to optimize patient safety and available capacity.
- Facilitate safe placement of patients within the Emergency Department by supporting with bed allocation.
- Work with the MDT to facilitate flow from Rapid Assessment into Majors, Resus, CDU by providing liaison and support through established communication networks.
- Act as a source of advice and support for escalation within the department, proactively identifying barriers to flow and initiating the appropriate response in accordance with escalation policy.
- Support the Emergency Department team to provide a positive, safe, patient experience.
- Support the organisation in achieving the 4 hour National Patient Safety Initiative within the Emergency Department.
- Work cohesively to build and sustain good working relationships with trust wide operational Teams and clinical staff.
Main duties of the job
- Responsible for ensuring a professional, effective and efficient service to patients, relatives, colleagues and Trust Staff.
- Use a wide range of effective and timely communication skills acting independently to explain, analyse and interpret information/data.
- Deal with and deliver decisions and actions modifying and adapting communication methods using influence and tact within delegated sphere of authority.
- Be accountable for planning, prioritising and organising work load, with competing demands and interruptions, ensuring work produced by yourself /team is of the quality and quantity required ensuring expected Trust and department standards and deadlines are met identifying and escalating areas of concern.
- Effectively role modelling a professional and welcoming service treating patients, relatives, colleagues and Trust Staff in a friendly and courteous manner presenting a good image of yourself through your attitude, behaviour and appearance.
- Take responsibility to ensure that the environment is safe and of a professional appearance and manage the reporting of any problems, organising of repairs/collection of waste as required.
- Monitor and manage the team to ensure the efficient and effective use of departmental equipment and resources.
