Job summary

Main duties of the job

The post holder will participate in a rolling 1:10 on-call rota at registrar level. When on call, they will act as Registrar of the Week from Monday to Thursday, and undertake one 24-hour on-call period with appropriate rest days rostered in line with working time regulations.

During on-call periods, the post holder will take senior responsibility for the assessment and management of emergency referrals and all aspects of inpatient care. They will also undertake emergency operating, with consultant support available at all times, and will liaise with other specialties as required.

When not on call, the post holder will contribute to the wider paediatric surgical service. This includes regular participation in elective and emergency theatre lists, outpatient clinics, multidisciplinary team meetings, teaching and supervision of junior trainees, and involvement in audit, research and quality-improvement activities. Training opportunities will be tailored to the individuals learning needs and the available subspecialty rotations within the department.

Job responsibilities

The Trust Grade Dr in Paediatric Surgery is based at the Leeds General Infirmary in West Yorkshire. This role is suitable for applicants who have Paediatric surgery experience at a higher level or post CCT or equivalent. It is ideally suited to candidates wishing to work in a large teaching hospital which provides many specialist services and is ideal for anyone wishing gain experience in various sub-specialties in Paediatric surgery.

The department provides exposure to all surgical aspects of children ranging from 0 16 years. This includes general surgery of childhood to highly specialised skills in fields of Thoracic Surgery, Upper GI Surgery, Lower GI Surgery, Hepatobiliary Surgery, Oncology Surgery, Neonatal Surgery and Urology. There are 2/3 consultants per specialty providing elective specialty work and all consultants participate in acute on calls (1:10) to provide general surgery for children and trauma service.
