Main duties of the job

We are delighted to be able to offer the opportunity for someone to join the paediatric respiratory sleep team at Southampton Children’s Hospital.

If you thrive in fast paced, focused night time environments and enjoy supporting children and families, this role brings together technical skill and patient care. Working nights only, you’ll play an integral part in delivering high quality overnight respiratory sleep studies for elective admissions and acute inpatients.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

You’ll support patients and their parents throughout their stay, set up and monitor studies overnight, and troubleshoot equipment to ensure clear and reliable signals. At the end of each study, you’ll download and prepare the data, remove artefact, mark sleep periods and upload results to patient charts. Any study falling outside expected parameters will be flagged for review.

Some nights you’ll also carry the on call phone, offering telephone support to families completing home studies between 19:00–05:00. Most shifts involve lone working, with ward staff available for support.

What we’re looking for: Someone who enjoys night work, values accuracy, and feels confident in a patient facing role. You must have: •    the ability to work nights flexibly across a 7 day period •    the ability to communicate with a wide range of people in varied settings •    the ability to work independently, assessing and intervening to ensure patient safety •    the ability to work with respiratory equipment and troubleshoot issues •    strong organisation and time management skills

We have 1 post available averaging 18 hours a week worked as 2 x 1 night weeks and 2 x 2 night weeks. These nights will be worked across the 7 day period. Please ensure you have read the full job description and person specification before applying.

Responsibilities:

- To set up paediatric sleep studies on the ward. - To confidently greet patients, relatives and other members of hospital staff, either face to face or by telephone, with enthusiasm, patience and understanding, in a sympathetic and caring manner. - To take responsibility for patients admitted for sleep studies  - To apply equipment to patients admitted for sleep studies - To monitor child during sleep studies - In coordination with the Sleep Physiologist is able to analyse reports, detect technical difficulties and highlight areas of concern to the appropriate consultant

Experience and skills:

- Ability to work nights shift across a 7 day period is essential, this post is on a 4 week rotation of 2 weeks of 1 night per week and 2 weeks of 2 nights per week.

- Ability to work independently, assessing and intervening to ensure patient safety.

- Ability to trouble shoot respiratory equipment and computer skills to be able to analyse and write sleep study reports.
