The post will offer you the opportunity to continue to develop your skills in a range of assessment and intervention with children and young people within the Cwm Taf Morgannwg population.

The post holder will be based at the Children Centre, Ysbyty Cwm Cynon , however will have opportunity to work across our other site's delivering robust intervention to a  complex and varied caseload.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will be based at Ysbyty Cwm Cynon, Mountain Ash however will be required to work across other health authority sites,  and will be required to work in a variety of community settings: clinic, schools, nurseries, client’s homes.

The post holder will manage a complex and varied caseload, assessing, identifying, planning and providing highly specialist occupational therapy (OT) interventions for children with disabilities/developmental problems. The post holder will implement the treatment plan with autonomy; taking sole responsibility for the patient’s safety when undertaking home visits/school and community work, and maintain clinical records in accordance with legal requirements and professional standards.

The post holder will provide leadership for junior staff, support staff and contribute to their development, as a delegated supervisor and regularly supervise OT students on practice placement.

They will work in partnership across the primary/secondary care interface with voluntary organisations, local authority and other appropriate health and social care sectors.

The post holder will :

  • Understand the principles of openness and transparency in relation to the appropriate sharing of information with members of both the nuclear and extended multi-disciplinary teams and with children and young people and their families.
  • Use a range of verbal and non-verbal communication techniques to communicate effectively with children and young people and their families in order to elicit co-operation and establish an appropriate intervention plan. Establish dialogue to review the effectiveness and progress of Occupational therapy intervention.
  • Communicate complex assessment and treatment plans to family/carers, children and young people and the wider context including Education; dealing sensitively with distressing or emotional issues and respecting the dignity and rights of the individual and their family/carers.
  • Establish and maintain excellent communication networks with members of the multiagency team, statutory organisations, private and voluntary sector.
  • Develop personal strategies to maximise the benefits of teamwork in order to deliver care.
  • Maintain good working relationships with children and young people; their family/carers, colleagues, and personnel from statutory and non-statutory agencies.
  • Deal appropriately and professionally with general enquires regarding the Paediatric OT Service: this may involve a pro-active approach to dealing with complaints.
  • Ensure organisation of regular supervision and/or consultation in order to promote personal effectiveness.
  • Maintain the highest possible clinical and professional standards; abide by national guidelines and standards relevant to clinical caseload and to take into account current evidenced based practice.
  • Work within HCPC Code of Ethics and Professional Conduct.
  • Take responsibility for maintaining own competency to practice through Continuous Professional Development (CPD), and maintain a professional portfolio in accordance with guidelines from the HCPC, which is required for professional registration.
  • Develop specialist skills and expertise within the field of Paediatric Occupational Therapy.
  • Maintain an up to date knowledge of legal issues affecting children particularly in relation to Education and Child Protection.
  • Undertake reflective practice and to contribute to the debate on a range of clinical issues relating to the delivery of children’s services.
  • Contribute in the development of standards, outcome measurement and service developments for good practice for service users.
