Applications are invited to apply for the above post at the Children’s Hospital, John Radcliffe Hospital, Headley Way, Headington, Oxford,OX3 9DU.

A less than whole time (0.77 WTE) consultant post in paediatric neurology is offered at the Children’s Hospital in Oxford for 18 months . This post is a part replacement post, covering a consultant (Dr Sandeep Jayawant) who is reducing his hours and stopping on-call commitments.

The successful candidate joins 6 existing consultants. The service provides pediatric neurology to a population of c 2.75 million and offers supra-regional expertise in congenital myasthenia, neuromyelitis optica, multiple sclerosis and NF2. There is close liaison with the 4 Paediatric neurosurgeons on a shared Paediatric neuroscience ward within a dedicated Children’s Hospital, supported by excellent Paediatric neuroradiology and EEG (including video-telemetry) departments. The appointee will have wide generic skills and any areas of specific interest and expertise will be welcomed and supported.  Expertise in neuromuscular disorders is desirable.

PRINCIPAL ACTIVITIES:

The postholder’s duties will be primarily in the Children’s Hospital Oxford at the John Radcliffe Hospital site, but it is a condition of the appointment that the postholder will be willing to work in any of the Trust’s locations. The service also provides out-reach clinics to a number of DGH’s in the region and the post-holder will be expected to provide a clinical service to at least one of these.

Clinical

The post involves carrying out Oxford-based out-patient clinics as well as full day clinics at one of the District General Hospitals within the region. The post-holder will deliver 9 weeks of on-call per year. There are a range of multidisciplinary clinical meetings dependent on the specialist interests of the post-holder and in liaison with the team and Clinical Director.

Teaching/Research

Oxford University Hospitals NHS Trust is a teaching hospital trust, and the post-holder will be required to participate in programmes for teaching Oxford University medical students, training junior doctors and in clinical examinations. It is expected that this will be an integral part of everyday clinical activity. The post-holder’s contribution to teaching, training and research will be included in the regular job plan review.

During the on call week the expectation is for a full day Monday to Friday (8:30-17:30), with weekend ward rounds (10-1), plus unpredictable on call work (covered by on call supplement). Total 13 PA during on call week.

In other weeks the average PA total will be approx. 6.3PAs, with 5.3 DCC spread over a 3 day working week on site, and 1 SPA which may be worked flexibly.

Average total over 42 weeks is 7.7 PA (6.7 DCC, 1 SPA).
