We have an exciting opportunity for the right person to join our team of dedicated staff here at UHCW who always strive to put the needs of the child and the voice of the child first.

The post holder will be the expert in providing clinical and educational support across all aspects of learning disability and autism. They will be expected to co-ordinate, develop and deliver appropriate training plans, supervision/ debriefing and support to all staff across the unit.

This post will play a key role implementing interventions to promote the health and wellbeing of children, young people and the families affected by learning disabilities and autism. The post will assist the Paediatric Nursing team in providing additional support for any child or young person who requires it. They will be the main link in learning disability and autism care, working as an integral member of the Multi-disciplinary Team who will positively represent the needs and rights of children and young people with learning disabilities and autism promoting equality.

We have a supportive and welcoming team which includes the Paediatric Adolescent Lead, Ward Management team, Paediatric Matrons, Paediatric Practice Educators, and a dedicated Paediatric Workforce Lead. Together they will ensure you receive the support you require throughout the recruitment process as well as overseeing your training and induction requirements to enable you to carry out your role.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

  • Accountable for own actions in accordance with the code of Professional Conduct.
  • Maintain own clinical competency in line with the NMC Code of Professional standards of practice for nurses, midwifes and nursing associates.
  • Promote best practice in line with current paediatric national and local guidelines.
  • Promote best practice in ensuring NMC Record Keeping Standards.
  • Act as a clinical role model promoting the professional image of nursing within the Trust and ensuring that nursing practice is in accordance with the Trust’s policies and procedures and statutory nursing bodies’ legislation.
  • To provide visible, credible professional clinical leadership, supporting the clinical management of children with Learning Disabilities and Autism who have been admitted to the acute paediatric unit or are in A&E.
  • The post holder will provide specialist nursing support for patients and their parents or carers in a timely and appropriate manner that optimises clinical management of learning disability and autism.
  • Actively engage in and deliver clinical supervision/ debriefing for self and others.
  • Promotion of positive attitudes and responses towards patients with learning disabilities and autism, challenging negative attitudes at all levels.
  • In collaboration with Paediatric Lead Nurse to take on the responsibility for relevant service development.
  • Leads on the development, implementation, evaluation and monitoring of the services guidelines / policies for best clinical practice. Advise clinicians and colleagues on changes to practice.
  • To maintain knowledge of relevant legislation in relation to children and adolescents including safeguarding children and young people, child protection procedures and policies.
  • To manage and participate in appraisals and personal reviews for themselves and members of the team and work to achieve agreed set objectives.
