Job overview

The role of dietetic assistant is to work alongside the paediatric dietitians to provide a high quality, compassionate health care to the patients under the care of the dietetics service at Hampshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.

Main duties of the job

  • Uploading supporting information to a document management system
  • Providing written information and oral nutritional supplement samples to patients
  • Dietary analysis of patient food diaries
  • Sending out appointment letters from patient hub
  • Scribing and formatting dietetic letters and sending to the relevant recipients
  • Updating patient details
  • Supporting with e-Outcoming and waiting time management
  • Providing cover for the paediatric dietetic assistant as and when required
  • To work within the British Dietetic Associations’ Dietetic Support Worker and Assistant Practitioner Competency Framework
  • Work within the diabetes team and support with patient education planning and delivery
  • To be responsible for recording department activity
  • Manage stock levels of formulas on the ward and within the department

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

  • To ensure that all patients in your area are given the appropriate information
  • Communicate appropriately with dietitians, consultants and other relevant staff about appropriate nutritional information that concerns the dietary management of designated patients
  • Be able to understand and overcome barriers to communication such as cultural differences and noisy environments. The information may also be of a sensitive nature and may require empathy and motivational skills.
  • To communicate regularly with the line manager keeping them informed as appropriate and escalating issues in a timely fashion if required.
  • To foster effective working relationships with colleagues in the department and other staff throughout the Trust.
  • To seek evaluation of own performance and provide feedback to others in a constructive, objective and timely manner.
  • To be actively involved and support the teams’ effectiveness by attending staff meetings and contribute to teams’ development and smooth running
  • To plan and prioritise your own workload and keep the team lead informed of any varying demands in workload.
  • To attend training schemes, as required, to assist in the development of the skills and knowledge required for the post
  • To participate in audit and research as required
  • To maintain, develop and record your own continuing professional development, demonstrating continuous evaluation of personal clinical practice and identifying opportunities to meet own learning needs
  • To participate fully in the appraisal and development review process
