South Bristol Academy – Bristol Royal Infirmary

Start: September 2026 | Duration: 12 months University Hospitals Bristol & Weston NHS Foundation Trust (UHBW) - Bristol site

Are you ready to expand your teaching skills while staying clinically active? UHBW is recruiting Clinical Teaching Fellows to join our vibrant South Bristol Academy team.

If you are ST3+ grade, and are interested in teaching, this could be the job for you. This position would suit Paediatric resident doctors - subject to OOPE approval from their Deanery.

Why this role?

You'll be at the heart of a busy, supportive, inner‑city teaching hospital—shaping the next generation of medical students while developing your own career in medical education.

What makes you perfect for this job

You’ll thrive if you:

  • Enjoy working with a friendly, mixed multidisciplinary team
  • Like a busy, student-focused environment
  • Are keen to develop new skills—including pastoral support and admin know‑how
  • Are organised and confident managing your own workload
  • Want the challenge of curriculum delivery, timetabling and assessment work

Main duties of the job

What you’ll do

You’ll spend 8 sessions a week teaching undergraduate students from the University of Bristol and 2 sessions a week in a specialty of your choice. You’ll also have the chance to complete a fully funded Certificate in Teaching & Learning for Healthcare Professionals.

Teaching responsibilities focus on the Child Health block of the MBChB curriculum, encompassing:

  • Classroom based teaching: occasional cover for CBL sessions on behalf of Consultant Tutors
  • Simulation: two days per 6-week block on Paediatric emergencies and common problems
  • Bedside teaching: regular small-group sessions at the bedside on specific systems
  • Mock OSCES: once per block, you will be responsible for planning and running the Mock OSCE

You will also have the opportunity to help out with other year group teaching, and helping run assessments both locally and with the Medical School.

The post holder will also be responsible for supporting a small team of junior Paediatric Clinical Education Fellows, and for organising the timetable for the Child Health programme alongside an experienced administrator.

Clinical Work

You can undertake up to one day per week (average) of clinical work in any specialty that interests you. These sessions are flexible, and there is no out-of-hours commitment.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
