Job overview

This is a new post and will replace two part-time Speciality Dentists who are retiring. You will join the current team of three consultants (two full time, one part time) with the Speciality Registrars and Speciality Dentists to provide a comprehensive orthodontic service for Durham, Darlington, Teesside and North Yorkshire at The James Cook University Hospital.

The Trust has a purpose built Orthodontic department at the James Cook University Hospital and is a facility shared with Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery and Restorative Dentistry. There are two single surgeries and a six chair open plan surgery for Orthodontic use. We have an excellent Medical Illustration and Radiology department with 3D imaging including CBCT and an excellent onsite laboratory service with 3D scanner and printer.

The department is a strong training unit with 2 StRs in specialist training and 1 post CSST linked to Newcastle Dental Hospital. The successful candidate will join our existing team to provide orthodontic treatment for a wide range of malocclusions under the supervision of an Orthodontic Consultant.

The successful candidate will be appointed under the NHS Agenda for Change terms and conditions. Full consideration will be given to applicants who wish to apply for a reduced/part time contract however, this would need to meet the demands of our service.

Applicants must be fully registered with the GDC and possess the Diploma in Orthodontic Therapy.

Main duties of the job

  • Work under the supervision of Orthodontic Consultants and Specialists to deliver orthodontic care based on the General Dental Council scope of practice for Orthodontic Therapists.
  • Maintain accurate clinical notes and records for patients undergoing orthodontic treatment.
  • Participation in annual appraisal carried out by the Consultants in Orthodontics. Appropriate time and assistance will be provided for preparation.
  • Active involvement in clinical audit.
  • Continuing professional development and participate in the Trust’s statutory and mandatory training programme.
  • Any other duties which may be required.
