An exciting opportunity has arisen for a part time Ophthalmic Technician, to join our Imaging Team within a rapidly expanding and friendly Eye Care Centre at Mid Cheshire Hospitals FT.
We are currently looking for a self-motivated, pro-active individual with both excellent time management and organisational skills to join our team.
This role will be offered on a permanent basis at band 3 level AfC. Previous Ophthalmology experience is desirable however, developmental training will be provided for the post holder to become proficient in selected areas of ophthalmic imaging, such as Optical Coherence Tomography, Visual Fields, Corneal Topography and more.
As an Ophthalmic Technician, you will have the opportunity to enhance your education in all aspects of the profession, developing a wide range of ophthalmic photography skills and being supported to achieve competencies and recognised certificates.
The Trust comprises of two main hospitals: Leighton Hospital and Victoria Infirmary Northwich (VIN) with each site requiring skill and expertise to the highest level. Although your base working location will be Leighton Hospital, working at both sites is a vital requirement for the successful post holder and own transport is essential.
Main duties of the job
- Assist registered practitioners in the provision of ophthalmic diagnostic and therapy services
- Participate in the development of self and others
- Work collaboratively and co-operatively with others to meet the needs of patients
- Perform subjective tests of visual function
- Perform objective assessments using ocular imaging
- Assist in ophthalmic diagnostic procedures
- Participate in the development of Healthcare Science Support Workers
- Provide administrative support to the Ophthalmic Diagnostic & Therapy services
- Undertake relevant qualifications

Job responsibilities
Clinical
- Measure vision and visual acuity for distance & near as appropriate using Snellen or LogMAR charts
- Perform autorefraction
- Measure spectacle prescriptions using automated & manual focimeters
- Perform visual field examination using the Humphrey Visual Field Analyser
- Perform rebound/automated tonometry
- Perform OCT and colour retinal imaging
- Perform Pentacam corneal topography
- Accurately & legibly record test results in patient casenotes / ophthalmic database
- Seek guidance from a senior member of staff when clinical results necessitate
- Instil dilating eye drops in accordance with protocols
- Manage own clinical workload
- Participate in the development of Healthcare Science Support Workers
- Ensure a safe working environment, reporting any risks or equipment faults to the relevant Speciality Lead
- Monitor stock levels of consumables
- Undertake other administrative duties as specified by the Speciality Leads / Manager
- Deliver reliable, effective customer service and contribute to its improvement
