Job overview

We are currently looking to recruit an enthusiastic and well-motivated Band 6 Occupational Therapist for the Occupational Therapy team at Fulbourn Hospital Cambridge.

The Inpatient Occupational Therapy team provide OT assessments and intervention for those admitted to acute adult inpatient wards for mental health and learning disabilities.

As a Senior Occupational Therapist, you will deliver and develop specialist OT assessments and interventions. These will include occupation focused group work, sensory strategies, reablement goals, functional assessments and focussed individualised interventions. These interventions will be based on the core principles of therapeutic use of self and our foundational approach. You will display leadership skills and the ability to supervise colleagues to ensure outstanding clinical delivery.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will fulfil the duties of the Senior Occupational Therapist as outlined below, across the inpatient services for acute adult mental health.

The Senior Occupational Therapist will coordinate and support the allocation of work across the inpatient wards.

In partnership with the individual, the Senior Occupational Therapist maintains, restores, or creates a match between the abilities of the person, the demands of his or her activities and occupations, and the demands of the environment to improve function and access to opportunities for participation in daily life. This is to be achieved through  structured and thoughtful goal setting.

The post holder will demonstrate a high level of understanding of occupational therapy models of practice, provide the skilful use of specialist assessments, advice and interventions to support the service user to engage in a meaningful activity, designed to increase function. This will include providing specialist support, knowledge and advice to team members who have identified a service user’s vocational needs.

The post holder will lead on the provision of Occupational Therapy interventions underpinned by the Model of Human Occupation (MOHO) and the principles of recovery and person-centred care.

The Senior Occupational Therapist will work under the supervision of the Occupational Therapist Advanced Practitioner.

Apply a high level of understanding of the impact of mental, social, sensory, emotional, cognitive, psychological, and physical issues on occupational performance, providing occupational therapy interventions and adaptations to the service user’s social and physical environment.

Work collaboratively with service users to create individualised, meaningful plans that support the achievement of Occupational Therapy goals.

Ensure that all modification to OT intervention plans and assessments will involve the service user and where appropriate the carer; collaboratively identifying, pursuing and reviewing goals in the context of care planning.

Promote equality of outcome for service users that reflect the individuality of their mental health need and those of ethnicity, gender, culture, physical health and age.

Promote social inclusion, physical and mental well-being using evidence-based practice.

Facilitate and promote the use of sensory strategies and approaches, in keeping with the principles of our sensory pathway.
