Job overview

An exciting opportunity has arisen within the newborn screening team to become a newborn screening champion.

The posts are fixed term for one year to cover maternity leave. The successful candidate will see families on day 5 on the maternity ward, the neonatal unit, in community clinics and in the home, providing a holistic approach to newborn screening and postnatal care. You will support the newborn bloodspot and newborn hearing screening programme, screening babies on day 5 and providing the families with feeding support, routine postnatal and well being checks. The post will be for 7.5 hours days and we cover 7 days per week.

Main duties of the job

To work as an integral member of the maternity team in the delivery of  the new-born screening programmes and provision of postnatal care to families in the Bath Clinical area on day 5.

To work under the direction of the New-born Screening manager to provide the following:

  • To provide a new-born screening programme which encompasses the new-born hearing and bloodspot screening tests.
  • To undertake a mandatory Level 3 diploma in New-born Hearing Screening, to start within 6 months of being in post. This will involve a requirement for some study in own time.
  • To undertake (once appropriate training has been received) the preparation of Equipment required to undertake the role.
  • To provide administrative support to the screening programme.
  • To maintain and develop the clinical skills required to provide a ‘Gold Standard’ screening programme.
  • To input and extract information as required relating to client details.
  • To welcome and interact with parents and their families in a prompt, professional and sensitive manner.
  • To arrange appointments and home visits.
  • To undertake administration and clerical duties involved in the day to day running of the service.
  • To understand and be able to offer information on the conditions screened for via the newborn screening programmes.
