Job overview

We are seeking enthusiastic, motivated and experienced practitioners to join the Gwent Neurodevelopmental Service, supporting children and young people up to the age of 18 with neurodiverse presentations. This is an exciting opportunity to work within a dynamic and evolving service focused on delivering timely, high‑quality assessments and reducing waiting times for families.

The role centres on neurodevelopmental assessment and requires confidence in clinical assessment, sound decision‑making and effective multidisciplinary working. Practitioners will contribute to a collaborative assessment approach, sharing expertise within a supportive MDT environment. You will attend a weekly MDT, actively contributing to assessment decisions and child‑centred outcomes.

The successful applicant will both offer and receive professional support, helping to maintain high standards of practice and consistent pathways for children, young people and their families. An understanding of the Gwent ND Profiling Tool, the ND assessment process and supervision and support skills would be desirable, with opportunities for ongoing learning and development encouraged.

Main duties of the job

Play an active role within a collaborative multidisciplinary neurodevelopmental team, supporting the delivery of high‑quality, evidence‑based assessments.

Contribute professional expertise to multi‑disciplinary neurodevelopmental assessments, helping to build a well‑rounded understanding of each child or young person’s strengths and needs.

Work closely with colleagues to support timely and effective assessment pathways, ensuring positive experiences and outcomes for children, young people and their families.

Promote awareness and understanding of neurodevelopmental conditions, including contributing to training for partner agencies and professionals.

Support families through advice, guidance and intervention, empowering them with knowledge, confidence and practical strategies.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

This post is a fixed term/secondment for 9 months until 31st March 2027 to meet the needs of the service, with full‑time and part‑time applications welcomed. If you are passionate about neurodevelopmental practice and value collaboration, quality and continuous improvement, we would welcome your application.  If you are interested in applying for the secondment position, you must obtain permission from your current line manager prior to applying for this post.

The Neurodevelopment Service evaluates multiple aspects of children's development received in the referral information and provides appropriate support to children and families. The process  of neurodevelopmental assessment is dynamic and individualised, requiring an empathetic and holistic approach.

The support / intervention provided will be based on a combination of interviewing, observation, standardised testing, and interpretation of results to evaluate a child's neurological and developmental functioning.

Information will be analysed from the referral to consider the developmental, familial, social and environmental factors of the child and family. This will include information about birth, early milestones and identify any familial conditions that might contribute to neurodevelopmental concerns (e.g., autism, ADHD, learning disabilities).

There will also be understanding of the child's home environment, social interactions, and educational background.

Standardised Tests used within the Neurodevelopment Service include: ADOS-2, QB and QB Check and Neurodevelopmental Profile Tools.

The clinician will be able to identify areas of developmental concerns such as speech and language issues, recognising differences in speech clarity and fluency, comprehension, expression, and pragmatic use of language. Evaluate the child’s use of gestures, facial expressions and body language, which is particularly important in assessing children with ASD and ADHD. The clinician will be able to evaluate the child's response to different sensory stimuli, such as touch, sound, and movement and understand their sensory responses.

Collaboration with specialists such as occupational therapists, speech therapists and psychologists is essential to get a full understanding of the child’s development and neurodevelopmental issues.

The clinician should integrate all collected data (clinical history, observations, standardised assessments) to identify areas / domains of need that are impacting upon the child’s daily functioning. Following the assessment process, the clinician will consult with the MDT to consider diagnostic outcomes, feed the outcome to the family, provide an outcome report based on the assessment and provide advice to post diagnostic services available to the child and family.

The ability to speak Welsh is desirable for this post; English and/or Welsh speakers are equally welcome to apply.
