Job overview

As the Neonatal Matron you must take overall responsibility in the management and leadership of the Neonatal Department.  As a registered, accountable and autonomous nurse you must act in the best interests of your patients at all times and take personal responsibility for your actions and decisions.  You will be responsible for patient assessment, diagnosis, planning of care, giving and supervising safe and compassionate care, and evaluating the effectiveness of care in the neonatal unit.

Main duties of the job

  • Provide expert advice on all matters relating to neonatal care.
  • Work with the lead Band 7 Nurses to ensure a consistent approach to neonatal nursing across all areas of responsibility, through collaborative working and the development of shared procedures and guidelines, supervising the audit of practice development and the implementation of action plans.
  • Work with the Lead Nurse to ensure that continuous quality improvement programmes are in place, working collaboratively with the Directorate of Nursing in the delivery clinical benchmarks.
  • Ensure that nursing practices comply with Trust policy, procedures and guidelines.
  • Act as an advocate for critically ill neonates and their families as appropriate; particularly when informed discussion may lead to choices being made concerning treatment options.
  • Collaborate with other health, education and social agencies to facilitate the best outcome for the neonate and their family.
  • Ensure effective discharge planning for all patients within areas of responsibility, through timely planning by multi-disciplinary team members and appropriate use of community services.
  • Work with the Band 7 Infant feeding lead to ensure ongoing compliance to Unicef Baby Friendly standards and support any future development of this service.
  • Provide professional role modelling to lead and inspire the professional development of neonatal care.
